Almost Messed Up

Thought I would burn the yard off and surprise my wife.Checked to see if the Hose was froze,it was. Well the wind is not blowing should be ok.

Well soon as I got it burning, the wind started blowing Not good!I was lucky the grass was a little frosty. It basically went out soon as it got to the grass, but I was sure wondering.

one time right after we moved here I was burning some boxes and thought I had it in a contained area. I didn't know dh had moved the long hose so that it wouldn't reach where I was burning. No wind at all when I started and everything went good. Thought the fire was out and about an hour later I looked out and it was heading towards the woods! Couldn't get the hose undone to move it either....hercules put it on ya know. Had to call the vfd out. We know most of them anyway as we go to church with them. I got a lot of teasing over that.

My grandfather went to burn brush one year while there was still a bit of snow on the ground but no wind, well there wasn't enough snow on the ground and the fire almost made it to the woods before the VFD arrived. Luckily the neighbors across the road called it in by the time I would've run back to the house to make the call it would've been a real mess.

Mom's cousin was a member of the VFD. The alarm rang, he ran down to the firehouse, suited up, jumped on the truck, and they headed to.....his house. His chicken house was on fire!

My one uncle was on the call he was not happy seeing his son and my brother trying to help put out the fire with bodily fluids.

This happened to us back in '05. DD was burning the brush/trash pile and the wind picked up, hose was frozen. DH, DD and I finely got it put out by stomping and using our jackets to smother it. Needless to say, DH then went and bought a burn barrel.

Around here, when the USFS lights off one of their famous "contained burns" & it get away from 'em & burns hundreds to thousands of extra acres, they simply call it an "Over Achievment".

My dad taught me a very healthy respect for fire. We lived so far out we knew everything would be gone before the FD could get there. I dug a burn pit with my front end loader that is about 5 foot deep at the deep end which I burn stuff in (nothing unburnable goes in) and when I burn there is a hose right there.

My FIL lost a barn full of stuff because the decided to burn a bit of grass. He had it rebuilt and less than a year later that one burned down after it was struck by lightning.

Must be nice to see the grass this time of year. We have 3 inches of snow on the ground already, with more to come this week end. Sounds like you were lucky.
