collectors, can you help?

My aunt has a New York Herald newspaper Extra 8:10 AM edition dated Saturday April 15, 1865 announcing "The Death of the President" with a picture of Abraham Lincoln on it --- the story that follows is the assassination of the President. She had it in some papers that her MIL had saved from her parents.

She is sure it is an original --- I haven't seen it so I don't know.......

Where would she go to get something like this authenticated and appraised???

They are in need of cash and her son won't help her at all....

authentication..probably an auction house would help with that. Local university history department head would MAYBE know who to talk to...worth a call, anyway. Depends a LOT on where she's located.

I found one similar on ebay for $50.

another that's an 1880 repro (used as an advertising flyer) of the announcement in the Herald...that's for sale at "buy it now" of $85. http://cgi.ebay.com/1880-Repro-of-Ab...QQcmdZViewItem

Thanks Ann, thats the first place I went.... Ebay is a marvelous thing!

Her edition matches the 1880 repro but it is not a flyer, it is a full 4 paged newspaper with other news and advertising throughout the paper.

interesting.....

My aunt still doesn't believe me but at least I tried! She is going to take it into the local college (linfield) to have it looked at before she admits its not a million dollar find!

You know, it's not really worth anything. No one would want it anyway, so just send it to us instead of trashing it! Just kidding,..... great find, I hope she can make some good money on it and it'll go to someone who appreciates it's value.
