I thought that Marie Antoinette movie was an interesting take on history. I think it was filmed in the castle she lived in(or what ever they call it in France). Box of Moonlight is a cool quirky movie. Also loved My Name is David--total tear jerker about a boy in WW2, awesome movie(I think it may be a true story too). The Sleeping Dictionary is good(it's got a little hanky panky in it it). Also just saw an australian film, Rabbit Proof Fence (or something, it was on IFC)--TRUE story about a couple aborigine kids who walked 1200 miles to get back to their families, and they have the kids(now very old) pictures at the end, GREAT true story movie!!!

You're right, there a lot of stupid stuff.

awwww, didn't the Cohens make Fargo? I loved Francis McDormand in that--I kept laughing the whole time cuz my grandparents are from Minnesota, my grandpa was Norwegian. It just killed me to hear people talk like my grandparents!

Zipporah, don't give up. Get Netflix. It's opens up a big, wonderful world of good movies. I'm in a bit of a documentary rut at the moment.

solution: rent movies from before 1960. TONS (hmm...MILES) of excellent movies to watch. From the original silent version of Birth of a Nation or Ben Hur or Cleopatra to the wonderful movies of Frank Cappra...maybe watch an old horror flick from Hammer Studios from the 60s, or for light comedy check out something with Cary Grant or doris Day.

Maybe a musical is more your style! Yankee Doodle is a great one! Music man. Ooooo..CARMEN! or West Side Story!

mystery? Check out the Sam Spade collections (Bogart is da BOMB!), or Sherlock Holmes...did you know that the man who played Ashley in Gone with the Wind was an English heart throb in the 30s and early 40s? and that he died in a plane shot down returning from Spain on a supposed spy mission in 1943!)

ah. sorry. Old movies are my speciality. I'll get down off the soap box now

Loved Fargo....for me the language just helped add to the kidnappers nastiness and the sex scene was more funny than anything.....I use most of those words on a daily basis anyways (and worse) and watching sex in a movie doesn't bother me so it was nothing that "offended" me.
I love movies....don't give up! Netflix can be a big help when trying to decide what to watch...their suggestions can be a good tool.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one to have trouble with the newer movies. Last Christmas, we received a gift certificate to a movie theater chain. I kept an eye on what movies were coming out, didn't see anything we would both enjoy. Finally, the new Indiana Jones came out, so we went to see it & use our gift card. Of course, they showed about 15 or 20 minutes of previews, of all the other movies that would be coming in the next months. I sat through that whole thing, and didn't see a preview for even one movie I wanted to see. Every one of them was dark and very violent. I find it kind of sad that so many people can enjoy watching stuff like that. I decided then that I must officially be an old fogey now, they sure don't make movies to appeal to me anymore!! Where's Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid when you need them??

I saw Fargo first on tv, so the bad words were gone. I still think the pregnant cop kicking bad guy butt(heh, without actually hitting them) was worth it

I second this! We only do Netflix now and they have a great variety. Also they have reviews from watchers(you can write one yourself) which gives you great insight into the type of movie it is.
I have a friend I call to ask about movies before I go see them in theatre......if she liked it I will hate it!LOL!

I would suggest reading up on a movie a bit before you watch it Zipp, heck I don't even get any TV channels in my house (where I could have seen previews) and I knew what I was renting when I got NCFOM.

I liked it, but then I like anything by the vastly intelligent and intertaining Cohen Brothers!

Zip, if you want to see a really good movie, check out "Cold Comfort Farm" with Kate Beckinsale.

I love it

You may need to go the Netflix route to find it, but it's well worth the subscription $$ IMO, sooooo much to choose from.
