Sad day, lost our new calf

After almost giving up on our heifer having her late calf, she went into labor and delivered a small beautiful red and white calf. We had walked away to keep her from getting nervous then noticed it was coming backward. She seemed to deliver easy while we were worried we would have to pull the calf. Of course, it had to be after dark. Anyway, the calf would not get up, then we noticed it had part of its front leg missing. It had not developed beyond the knee. Knowing if it could not nurse or walk we could not keep it. Our neighbor put it down for us and we all had tears. The Mother has quieted down and since she did not nurse, she may get over the loss quickly. I know we all mourn with her. Several neighbors were here and helped us get the calf wrapped in a blanket and out of site until we can dispose of it in the morning. Needless to say, sleep is hard coming tonight. Jklady

Sorry.

The losing makes the having more dear.

It is good to honor the worthiness of brief and imperfect life.

Unfortunately just part of having cattle. I've been around farm animals all my life and it still kinda bothers me when I lose a calf. Or lose a cow for that matter.

Even with having to lose a few I so enjoy calving time. They're just so darn cute. Some of the most satisfying farm work there is I think.
