Gardening and Relaxation

Isn't it funny that gardening can be a real pain in butt, hard work, frustrating, and disappointing, but when you are done working it is a great feeling for what you have done. We go through H%LL to grow that perfect tomato or pepper, but beam in pride when we grow one. I worked all day again today working in garden and garden area and there was a lot of sweating and a lot of swearing (to myself), but when I got done it sure makes you feel good about it. Does anyone else ever ask themselves why do we do this? It kind of reminds me of what someone said about the game of golf. People will yell, scream, and cuss all day on the golf course, but they make that one great shot and it brings them back the next day.

I agree! And I am also one who is angry at the weeds, angry at myself for pulling something I shouldnt' have, etc.. But I feel closest to nature and to God when I am in my garden creating food for my family. It is enormously satisfying to cook with the freshest, tastiest ingredients. It makes me feel wonderful to see my family enjoy my cooking too. The garden is also my workout.

my garden is my therapy-- i can spend several hours weeding one of the flower beds and get that meditation high from it. I consider my weekend ill-spent if I am not in one of the garden beds at least part of both days. I did give up on veggies here, though. My house in Nashville had lots of sun and I grew some great toms, peppers, tomatillos and the like but now that I am out of county and in the country I grow better flowers--my vases are overflowing and others grow my veggies for me! I love the CSA that grows eggplant, and beets and other lovely things that I cannot seem to grow even after three years of trying.

I do it because I get a great deal of pride from the fact that my efforts yield something that nourishes my family. But I almost feel bad for saying that I don't find gardening particularly pleasurable or relaxing, although it IS quite rewarding.

Because it's only therapy where you can legally kill something...a weed...feel good about it, take pride in it, tell your friends about it...and not have to worry about getting arrested, or having PETA show up to picket you!

I spent all of Monday in the vegetable garden. Thinning carrots and radishes, weeding, tilling and raking. I gave a lg toad a ceramic toad house to live in. Then I watered it all. It looks beautiful and growing very well. I cant wait until it starts producing healthy fresh vegetables. I brush over the tomato plants with my hand, and that green tomato smell is absolute heaven...Nothing is more pleasing then a hard days work that produces food for you. Well, maybe that great tee shot is a close second.....:banana02:
