Ideas for making a Canopy Bed.....

Since we've ripped the nasty carpet up, and will at some point be putting down wood laminate. We've decided to take advantage of the fact we have just plywood subfloor to paint what rooms we can. Starting with DD's bedroom. It's currently lavender, but I got a pretty shade of PINK, and its' PINK!! We are wanting to do it in a carousel horse theme. Since she already has a beautiful ceramic carousel horse lamp in her bedroom.

Her bed now is getting old, and it use to be a canopy. But the house we lived in before this place was an old cape, and we had to remove the posters to it in order for it to fit in the room. Of course, since we moved, they got misplaced!! ARGH!!
I just went to an antique store and they had a twin white iron bed that looked pretty and would go with the theme. They want $109 for it, but the owner of the store is going to call the lady who runs that booth to see if she will come down on the price.
the only thing is this iron frame and side rails are bolted together. DD's current bed is wood with the side rails that slide into slots onto the headboard and footboard. And currently the safety rail, which was custom made that slides over the wood rail. We are thinking we could modify the wood headboard and footboard (by cutting them off and leaving the "frame") and then bolting the iron footboard and headboard onto the wood "frame." But then we wouldn't have a canopy. Unless I do one of those curtian rod deals. Which could work.

But, I was wondering if anyone has ever built thier own bed? And any ideas for making a canopy with the actual posters??

Perhaps you could stack a bunch of these and put the mattress on them?

At one time I made a canopy beds for our 2 daughters using their same single beds. This is what I did...I used regular flat sheets and sewed lace trim around them. Then screwed 4 hooks into the ceiling and then attached the 4 corners..or close to the corners of the sheet to these hooks and it hung like a canopy does without any post from a bed. Sew little rings on the 4 corners of the sheets to hang onto the hooks into the ceiling. You might have to mess around a bit to get the look you want. I can't remember if I used a single sheet or a double sheet for this. Then you get the sheets for the bed and blanket to match and IF you want to go wild...make curtains from the same sheets to match. !!! It wasn't hard and I am certainly not a very good person on a sewing machine but it didn't take much time or talent to do this. Try it..Good Luck !!!

A largish round wooden quilt frame can have thin curtain material looped or sewn over it and then tacked, tied or wired to the ceiling or the wall. Sue

I used PVC pipe and made a square the same size as the bed and hung it from the ceiling. Hung sheer fabric, don't know if would have handled real heavy stuff

Another time I used a hula hope and made a sort of canopy that only covered the head of the bed.
