I wish I could take a break from the news in my state

Two young girls gunned down on a rural road. No suspects. No motive.

Someone threw a tombstone off an overpass injuring a truck driver.

State auditor on trial for being crooked.

Every time a ranking comes out for how we treat our children, we're near the bottom.

I'm going to go home, hold my family close, turn off the TV and radio, and sit on the back porch listening to the wind and looking at the sky.

Oggie - your going home plan sounds needed.

And stopping the world and getting off for a bit, allows you to stay sane (relatively) when you have to get back on.

I think you should reconsider your opinions on cats as I suspect they are getting even with you!! Chilling out is the best thing to do and there is nothing wrong with taking an adult time out.

It's everywhere....trust me!

Maine often comes out high ranking for kids but I think its BS....Sure they get immunized but that is no remedy for the bullying, low economics, and number of sexual predators in the state.

I took a break from the news for 18 months.

The rest of the world was still there when I got back! So, cancel your paper and stop watching the news!

Man, I'll take Oklahoma news over news from anywhere else in the country. Sure, sometimes we get a few minutes of national fame for our news, but for the most part it is wonderfully boring here.

Small price to pay for getting to live in a free state.

"Absorbing the news"
Wow. That hits home. When I was a kid, the VietNam war was on the news all the time. ALL the time. We lived in a small trailer, I didn't think I was watching but I was absorbing it. Many years I was afraid of helicopters. Just knew they were going to bomb our little Iowa town. Irrational, of course. Finally, I think in my 30's I realized why I was afraid of them. A tribute to Walter Cronkite was on, and WOW that made me sit up and take notice. It explained So many things.
Then my beloved only nephew got sent to Iraq.
All the horror stories of the 60's came back to haunt me. That was the worst year of my life. I know others feel the same way, but I think if I had not absorbed all that VietNam stuff it may have been a teesy bit easier.
Even now, someone tells me their BF, brother, sister, etc is over there I tear up.

I'm taking a lifelong break from the news! I NEVER watch the local news on TV and I don't listen to it on the car radio.

It bothers me when people post disturbing news stories here, so now I don't read those posts.

My son will call and fill me in on world events. I don't really want to hear it, but he insists I need to know.

I prefer to sit on my front porch and listen to the birds singing joyfully. That's all the news I need.

The only useful reason for a TV in OK are the weather warnings. Other than that, they can keep the rest of the news. My Dr. told me a few years ago to practice a TV "fast" - good advise!

My son took a break like this a few years ago, and until I read all your posts, I thought it was really stupid of him, not to be 'up to date' on all the current events! He told me he saw nothing good, ever on the news, and it depressed him so much. Now, I understand fully! I WAS WRONG to feel that way, and will certainly tell him so. Jan in Co
