I quit my job
Crazy as it may seem in these uncertain economic times, I quit my job. Yesterday was the last day.
I've worked from home at this job (accounting) for over 3 years; since February I'd been required to travel 180 miles RT to the office once every two weeks; then in May it was once a week. It was just too much! I also have another part-time acct job, and between the two I was putting in 60+ hours a week for the last year.
Three weeks ago my part-time company offered me a full time position; it's 6 blocks from home - I'll be walking to work most days. Boss is great, she asks a lot but is very appreciative and isn't afraid to show it. Co-workers are knowledgeable and hard working. The only downside? It pays $6 per hour less than what I was making.
My dh & ds encouraged me to make the move...even though our income will drop substantially. Nobody 'round here was happy with Mom always back here at the computer & working nights/weekends. Starting Monday, I'll work 40 hours a week, put in a few weekends during tax season & quarterlies, but when I'm off work - I'm really off work! I'm also very happy to be working in an office that provides a real service to the folks in my little community (we do payroll, general accounting, and taxes) - not just making somebody else rich.
I plan to get re-aquainted with my horses, hang out with my dh & ds, walk my dogs, organize my house, and relax. Oh, and spend some more time around here

The money you save on travel and extra taxes will help make up the difference in your hourly rate. The tightwad tips thread has a lot of money-saving ideas too. I think your signature line says a lot too!

Trust me you'll figure out how to live on your new income rather quickly. Gone are the days when a job change means an increase in salary. When you crunch all the numbers, I suspect you'll find you aren't making all that much less and will have more time, which is a scarce and precious resource. Can't make more time, can't get it back.

I've also quit mine (self-employed), temporarily, or you might say just taking the summer off, maybe all summers henceforth, that is from May 1 to Nov. 1.

When I started being home on weekends, DH would wake up, hug me, and say "It is so GOOD! to have you home"!
Even though our income took a hit, he was GLAD!

I appreciate your kind words. Yes, I think (hope :-) ) it's the right thing to do.
I noticed a couple things over the last year. My grocery bill skyrocketed because I was buying more convenience foods. My weight went up due to eating more processed foods & getting a lot less activity. My relationship with dh was not healthy, because I was either working at the job or working at home and always frantic about one or the other.
Dh is taking on extra odd-jobs this summer (he works in the school so has summers off) and he & ds will be doing projects around the house to either a)improve efficiency in heating/cooling or b)increase the value of the house as in bathroom remodel or c)preventive maintenance to save $ in the long run with the house & cars.
I think this is a good thing, and I encourage others to do the same :-)

When your income goes down and you reduce your spending accordingly, you are just as well off as before.Congratulations.

Woo hoo! You go girl! Feels empowering, huh?
...... Speaking as a recent job (career) quitter...... I thought it would be the end of the world if I left my career. I really did! But gawd, I was miserable for so long. And so was my poor DH. And my cats.
What a leap. What a relief. What a decision! I took four months off, just to decompress. Okay, maybe I was just a little selfish, too. And we did just fine financially. Whew. Being frugal pays off.
And now I'm back to work, doing something similar, but on my own terms. I'm losing weight, eating better, and (gasp!) actually am okay with getting up at three in the morning to begin my workday.
It took a long time to get there, but I can say that Life Is Good!!
