Oh no, shtf scenario

Long story short...
Last month I took a job with a company that works with people addicted to alcohol and drugs. We get paid monthly. I've already gotten a check for December, I worry about January as all three principals may soon be submitting a change of address form via the Federal Pen!

Seems they falsified some documents to operate with state money. Then they falsified a few more and used the name of two innocent men- oh and they owe back taxes somewhere in the realm of 75,000.00. There is a meeting with the IRS next week and it's expected that there will soon be charges filed.

My *informant* suggested I make like a rat off a sinking ship. The problem? There's not much to be had, job-wise. I looked for nine months before I found my current position. Not to mention noone much hires around the first of the year.

So what do I do? Start looking for another job? Certainly. Leave the second I find one? What do I give for my reason for leaving? Consequently, when the interviewers ask WHY i'm leaving, how do I allude to the fact i've done nothing wrong and am not some job-hopper?

Eek. I sorta wish i'd stayed in bed today.

More information

Is the organization something that will survive the higher ups "screw ups?" Or is the whole organization dependent upon the funding they have been "falsifying?"

If the organization is "solid".....stay and ride it out. If the organization is contingent upon the falsified funding...I would bail......as it sounds as if you will be more "proactive" instead of reactive with the situation.

Tough one.

Ouch. Start looking and tell the prospective employer that you have a bad feeling?

Eyah.. been here and done this. My employer made every paper in the state, plus TV news, and it seemed to go on endlessly. And having them on my resume? Let's just say people were not interested in talking to me once they found out who I'd been working for.

The thinking seemed to be that either I was aware and in on the scam (and thus not to be trusted), or I should have known about it and what was going on (and if I genuinely didn't was too stupid for words).

I would suggest that you make copies of any news articles that appear about this fiasco, which will also not mention your name, or mention your name as an innocent party. Make copies of any documents which might be helpful to proving you had nothing to do with this, quietly, of course. Burn CDs of email. Do NOT delete anything you haven't made a backup copy of, or shred anything.. in short, don't allow anyone to make you an unwitting accomplice by destroying evidence.

And consider putting some space between this and your next job, maybe take some courses or get some training.

Don't quit. Wait for the bitter end. That way you will be able to apply for unemployment compensation (if you are otherwise eligible) or other government run programs that might help you out in the long run. If you quit, you might not be eligible.

Be glad you have only worked there a month. At least they won't try to blame anything on YOU (hopefully).

A little background information. There are 3 principals involved. Those three created a company seven years ago, due to mismanagement, they lost the charter on the business. Same line, receiving state/government money. It was shut down and almost 70 people lost their jobs and some their homes. This company I work for surfaces. Same three, not able to obtain a charter in their name, they falsify with one of their FATHER'S name. They are more or less a trifecta. If the company goes, we all go. There's only about 12 employees.
I feel for everyone and feel even worse that I can't say anything.
I don't see me being implicated, as without this person's information, i'd know nothing of it. It does, however, serve to make me more alert to anything that could possibly be related.
I hate this. I finally found a position with the hours I wanted, close to home and something I really like to do. Rats.
