Any computer nerds on here?

I started my truck to keep the oil thin. For some reason my lap top must have taken extra power. It started smoking from the back and died. Thick smoke that smelled like electronics burning.

To my supprise she powered right up.

Any idea what I must have fried?

Hey.

Surge protection is needed. Power supply would be the first hit. Capacitors are prone to smoking when damaged.

It seems to be running fine so far. I wander if maybe it was a video card or something that got toasted? I know VERY LITTLE about the inside of these things.

I have noticed that my task bar that used to be on the bottom of the screen is now on the right side. I have no idea how to get it back were it gose.

if it was your video card that fried I don't think you'd be seeing anything. What about the battery? I know on one laptop we had there was a recall due to the chance of that. I'm not that familiar with laptops but I'd start by looking at the battery or the power supply. You should be able to right click on the taskbar make sure "lock the taskbar" doesn't have a check by it and just drag it back down to the bottom.

No battery. I pulled the batt out and it is in the shop getting reworked.

The task bar is not locked. It just is on the right side of the screen vertical.

I want it back to on the bottom horizontal.

power supply over voltage would be my first thought ...electronics are real picky about voltage spikes
as far as the taskbar just right click on a blue area of it , uncheck "lock taskbar" grab it with the mouse and pull it back to the bottom then right click again and put a checkmark on "lock taskbar"

Hmmm... computer programmer here, so not much help with hardware, but if it was smoking, I would take it in to have it looked at. It could be that the plastic of one of the boards melted, but none of the actual components were fried. If it was your fan that died, your computer could overheat and seriously damage it. The case should be opened and damaged at least assessed. Could be nothing, but it could be something that would shorten the life of your computer.
