curious question
My child and I thought we might put up a simple cross with white lights
outside for christmas. We were looking at the things sold at the store -
reindeer, trees, etc. for lawns and wanted to make something of our own. We thought a cross would be nice and easy to do. Is a lit up cross
"O.K." to do at christmas (or is it just an Easter thing) - i think it would as we live in the bible belt, but i'm curious what you all think. Also, i thought it would make people think about the meaning of christmas. Should it be a
star (celebrating the birth of christ)?
I guess it goes along the lines of when a friend gave me a candycane one year and attached was the poem about the real story of them (religous).

perennial - the white cross is a symbol of when Christ died. Christmas is celebration of his birth - you might want to rethink you idea?

I think the cross is not the typical Christmas decoration but it is perfectly okay.
The reason Christ was born into this world was to lead men back to Our Father in heaven.
He gained our Salvation through His death on the cross.
It's all tied together.
I think it would be appropriate and even get a few people thinking about the real reason for Christ's birth.

Just don't hang Santa on the cross and you should be okay.

I'm not Christian, but I do have my two cents, if you're interested. I would skip the star, as many Wiccans/pagans/etc. relate it to the pentacle. I know that I have made that assumption in the past and been WAY off (but that could just be me being silly)!! I'm sure that a cross is very appropriate, as most people, Christians and others associate the cross symbol with Christ. No matter what you choose, I'm sure it will look lovely...

People look too much into things. Do it if you want, and if anyone complains locally...poo on them and the horse they came in on .

Why don't you just put up whatever you want and not worry about what other people may think? As long as your decorations have meaning to you, and you are able to explain the significance to anyone who may ask... do what you will.
The holidays mean different things to everyone. If we all had to stop and think about how not to offend every single other person with our celebrations, we wouldn't have holdiays at all.

I have a 7 foot high cross covered in white lights on my lawn every Christmas. Everyone always says it looks nice, no one has ever complained.

I see white light crosses in christmas displays all the time around here. Never heard anyone complain.
I'd second what Bink says though *LOL* Bink you have one twisted sense of humor...

It's nice to hear what you all have to say. When i was a young child and even a teen, when we would go the "city" to pick up someone at the airport, there was always a huge cross on this hill lit up and it made an impression upon me no matter how many times i would see it.
Where we are living now (in another state), religion is VERY strong here. There is even this old wooden sign up year round, about 15 miles from us on the main route (on private land), that says "are you prepared to meet your maker". Now that definitely gets my attention no matter how many times i pass.
I just thought of the cross because i'm tired of seeing the adds on tv and all with what to buy and how they will save me money. I think the commercialization of christmas is gross.

We have lots of white light crosses displayed around here, too. Yes, you could get nitpicky and say it was symbolic of when He died, but I for one celebrate His death as much as His birth at Christmastime (that is why He was born, right?!). I think any symbol of Christianity is a reminder of why I celebrate Christmas, so I love to see the crosses any time of year. I think it is a great idea!

And technically, one of the gifts given to the baby Jesus was myrrh, a burial spice, foreshadowing His death. So it's not really out of place to allude to it.

It's Christmas, I would stick with a Christmas theme, and save the cross for Easter. I think it would have more meaning that way.

Thanks for reminding me!
I have a huge (like 8' tall?) cross made of treated 4x4s, wrapped in Xmas lights, which I found on the property I bought in April ... the previous owners had left it behind.
I tried to give it away on Freecycle previously, and a zillion people said they wanted it, but no one ever showed up to pick it up. Grrr!
Maybe now would be a good time to relist it!
If anyone here wants it, and wants to come to Beaver County, PA, to pick it up, please PM me!

I just lit up my cross last night. Thing is, I made it last Feb in memory of my sil that passed away then. I had it lit for a few weeks and then again at Easter. I love it. DEE

I don't feel that a cross is appropriate during the celebration of the birth of Christ. How about a simple star? Made of wood?

My mother has been putting a cross with white lights on her front door at Christmas for 50 years. She's always gotten lots of positive comments, and never a negative one.
Do what makes you happy. It certainly isn't hurting anyone else!
