Half Mast Flag Order

I have been away from home and television and news reports for much of the last several days.

I have been seeing flags at half mast for a couple of days now in several areas of Kansas.

Can someone fill me in on why the order for half mast? Death of ???

Can anyone also fill me in on the web site that stays updated as to flag orders? I can't seem to find it from afar while I have it bookmarked at home.

Thanks, Windy in Kansas

I don't know of a website but the flags were being flown at half-staff in honor of a soldier killed in Iraq.

It can also be a local thing. Around here if a police officer or fire fighter dies in the line of duty, flags are flown at half mast for a few days.

More often than not we have had someone from the military (past or present) or a member of our local emergency and saftey departments perish, the local flags will stand a half mast until internment.

Thanks for the Replies

Thanks for the replies and the link to the news story about the flag order.

Once I return home I think I'll sign up for email notification of flag lowering orders that a flag company offers. I know that I did have a site bookmarked, at least at work, that told of all such order across the US.

They were also at half mast in Philadelphia yesterday. Saw them flying while watching the parade on television. So my guess is that it may be someone more 'national' rather than regional.

This ticks me off to no end. Where do local or state officials think they get the power to lower the NATIONAL colors? It more than a banner to be used to send political signals!!
