When men were men
I'm spending my Thanksgiving day scanning old family photos. I love this one. The guy on the far right in my great grandpa. This pic was taken around 1910.

Here's my great grandpa Gustafson. This was taken in Port Wing, WI which is on the south shore of Lake Superior. We figure this was taken in the late 20's.

Here's another pic of great grandpa Gustafson. He's doing some logging along Lake Superior. We're pretty sure the teams of horses are on the lake. They would skid logs across the lake to Minnesota.

1st pic with oxen is of my great grandpa that is 100% German. Other two pics are of my great grandpa who is 100% Swedish. However, the last picture is of my hubby who is 100% Norwegian.

the picture of puting up hay is very interesting.i never seen a set-up like that for hay gathering.its pretty neat the way they done it.here the hay stacks where gathered and piled on by hand .all the pictures are great.....looks like rugged men useing the best equipment of their times to make a living.thanks for sharing again.

UpNorth, your first pic makes me think of "The Living" by Annie Dillard. Great book.

Good dogs, too! I dunno about the boots, though, the stock car racers wear that kind of rubber boot around here at the dirt track. Does he race the tractors?

Yes. The machine between the two horses is the loose hay accumulator. it collects up a large mass of hay, then the horses pull it to the hay stacker in background of photo. Then hay stacker flips it up onto the loose hay stack.
*Note woman in white standing near hay stacker*
Men were men in those days, yes, but women did MORE than their share of the work too!...LOL.
