Would you have a garage sale on Black Friday?

I need to have a garage sale. I have a ton of stuff to get rid of. Stuff the kids don't want. Stuff from one of my adopted kids' cousin being here...and just general STUFF. Where the stuff is now is where I want to put my Christmas tree.

I can't get the sale together for this weekend and next weekend is National Adoption Day and I'm going to be at the Courthouse witnessing my best friends adoptions. The weekend after that is Thanksgiving weekend.

Usual days for garage saling are on Wed. and Sat. around here. I'm thinking of having the sale on Friday and Saturday. I live 5 minutes from the mall and a Kohl's, so there would be a lot of traffic going by my signs.

What do you think? Would you hold the sale or just put the stuff in the basement until the spring?

Go for it. There'll be lots of bargain hunters out so you should do real well.

I would not, but that is just because I usually lay around doing absolutely nothing after having spent 20 hours on my feet the day before feeding 40+ people!

I think it's worth a try....be sure and let us know how it turned out.

Ditto! Not everyone will hit the dept stores and folks have the time off work. try it for a few hours and see what you get.

I say go for it too BUT make sure you are ready to handle someone stopping in at 0600 or whatever time Kohl's and the mall open. You *know* this is going to happen so if it were me, I'd just plan on opening close to the time the stores open.

I want to thank you for the idea, I think I'm going to try that on Black Friday. If nothing sells, I'll just pack it up for spring. I have a lot of duplicate small appliances that have been used once or twice; blenders, electric roasters, irons, stoneware sets for 12, glasses, on & on plus the standard yard sale items.

I think I'm going to advertise it as An Alternative to a High Price Holiday and open about 1/2 hr before the majority of stores in the area. :baby04:
Coffee and warm cider plus some holiday music should set the mood.

This might be fun!!

Not here. Yard sale season is over. Mornings have been in the 20's or lower the last week.

I thought Black Friday was the day the stock market crashed in 1929.

Yuppers, that's what they used to mean by that term, but I don't think anyone wants to consider the stock market falling that way again so they've started using the term for the sales on the day after Turkey Day. Of course, the way the markets been going, maybe this year it will mean both!

That was a Tuesday (whether the child was full of face or not I do not know). In a prior life I worked at a credit card company. The pool was on as to how many transactions over the holiday season. I sat and watched the transactions on Black Friday and just about lost it. 10+ years ago the goal was to process 60 per second.

Great idea! Hopefully the weather will hold for you. Could be the best idea I've heard in years!

I think the day after Thanksgiving is a GREAT day for a yard sale! I never thought about it myself, but I've got enough stuff hanging around that I think I'll set it out on Black Friday. DH & I usually go to the mall and people watch, but he works Fridays now.

Traditionally, many retailers spend the Fall ordering and stocking heavily to prepare for the holiday shopping season. For many, drives their bookkeeping in the red to invest in the higher inventories.

The Friday after Thanksgiving, so many people shop (and so much $$$ comes in) that the retailers' books come out of the red ink and into the black.

Hence the name - "Black Friday"
