Anyone Here From South Carolina?

My DH and soon to be SIL are talking a lot about moving to SC. We are all so tired of the Left coast and all the research DH and soon to be SIL have done point to SC. We are conservative Christian republicans/Constitutionalists and it feels like we are drowning here in the peoples republic of Multnomah County. (Oregon) We thought of moving to southern Oregon; however, although it is considerably better it is still in Oregon, and under the thumb of a very Liberal Portland.

I know very little about SC and although research is great I feel the need to hear from people who actually live or have lived there.

We want to have a Homestead there. My DH is a software engineer (A VERY good one) and he will need to find work there.

I would love to hear good and bad.

Thanks

What part of SC? I am a few miles above the border and went to school here about 20+ years ago.

Generally speaking, you have to love heat. Its usually 10 degrees hotter than hell here.
Greenville/Spartinburg would be a good place to look into, a lot of growth and plenty of country around it for a homestead and close to the mountains [though its getting expensive there]. Stay away from the Pee Dee area as we have the highest unemployment & crime rate in the state. Orangeburg is about the same. Charleston is a great town but I prefer mountains to beach now days. Myrtle Beach is a tourist trap and the traffic is terrible and the crime rate is climbing.

Columbia is a pretty nice place as far as capitals go but I wouldn't want to live there.. too many people and too hot.

We live about 1 hour from Columbia and love it.
It is hot during the summer, but you can have a garden almost all year round.
My folks live outside of Charleston.
Gas is among the lowest in the country.
We do not turn the heat on until after Christmas and turn it off in March, normally

What about the SIL's SO?

I do know that some places in the south are known to not be exceptionally welcoming to outsiders. The Carolinas come to mind.

lol...I lived in NC for over ten years and have been in SC for over 6 and have never run into anyone who had a problem with a yankee being here. Now I've lived in a few places in Fl. where the locals thought anyone who wasn't born there was a snow bird and weren't very welcoming but those were few.

Kmac15 is right about two growing seasons. We are having our first frost tonight and that is rare.. I'll bet it'll be in the 80s next week. I haven't seen a snow flake in 4 years and then it was an inch that was melted by noon. Kinda miss that.

I agree...you wanna live in SC be prepared for the heat AND humidity. It can get pretty stagnant and wrank in the summer.

I live in NC myself...we don't mind yankees and 'outsiders' here so long as you behave yourself and don't treat us like we're all from the movie Deliverance.

Our daughter Is in the same boat as me. We're up for the move if it will get us to an area where the folks are more conservative. She is actually pretty excited about the possibility.

We plan to take a couple trips there and spend some time checking out towns, churches, jobs and maybe connecting with some folks before we make the move. Hopefully that would help with the outsiders thing. If we make some connections before we make the move those connections might be able to soften our arrival with the other locals.

yep and don't come here and try to make it like "back home". Been in this area all my life and what everyone has said is true....its hot, its humid....did I say it was hot and humid? We don't mind northerners coming down...till they start telling us how much better it is back up north.(If its so much better why did they leave?) We're pretty conservative too......course that gets less and less as the world gets more corrupt. I'm in SC near the border at Charlotte...this area is growing too fast. Prices are outrageous and still climbing although I think they've hit their limit and we're in for a big decline in the market.

You can say what you want about the South,
But you never hear of anyone retiring and moving North.
