Cottonmouth!!!

Hubby just killed a cottonmouth down at the bottom of the hill. One of the puppies found it, but didn't get bitten (thank goodness). Hubby killed it with a STICK. The snake was three and a half feet long and huge. The stick wasn't quite that long!

Glad he and the puppy didn't get hurt doing this.

My mammaw always said if you smell cucumbers, cottonmouths are near by. I've never had it happen when I was visiting in the south but it a rule by which I live.

I've heard that too Selena, but I don't think hubby smelled anything but fear! He was so afraid the pup was going to get bit.

We were going to go and cut some wood yesterday, we were a little leary of it because it still hasn't cooled down enough to make the snakes hide but felt we needed to get the wood in. On the way there we stopped and I got out to open the gate....a rat snake went slithering away just a couple feet from me. I left the gate closed, got back in the truck and told DH that was a sure sign we didn't need to go cut wood!

Not sure about Cottonmouths........

But, a 110 gr. HJHP will blow a Copperhead snake clean in two,
if you get a good shot on him.
I do not mess with poison snakes. Shoot 'em!
There are enough beneficial non-poison snakes around.
I have shot a couple snakes in the pond.
But, not sure what they are. Musta been Cottonmouths, hunnh.
Gone now.

We only kill poisonous ones and all of those have been cottonmouths. We've had two dogs bitten and don't want any more bitten. We don't want to get bit either! I believe hubby will be getting a pistol for Christmas so he won't have to use a stick next time (last summer he killed a moccasin at the barn with a screwdriver).
