I can feel an addiction coming on...

An animal addiction that is!

I just got back from my first dairy auction that was held down the road. It was all holsteins that went for a lot more money than I had ever imagined but they were big & beautiful with great lineage so I guess that makes a big difference in what people are paying for them. My 4 year old daughter had her eye on a little 2 month old calf in particular that went for $1500!

The farmers son took us back to the bottle baby barn and we stayed back there forever. The jerseys calves were sooo sweet & friendly. I really thought about stuffing one in the back of my mini-van but I thought DH might not appreciate that one too much. I'm still thinking of how I can sneak one home... any ideas? lol

I'm really excited about getting us some animals. :baby04:

I really like having animals around, and I am glad you are discovering the excitement of it as well.

That said, I have owned 3 cows, and I would never, ever recommend a dairy cow as a first animal project for anyone.

Hmm... cattle addicting? Nah, not too addicting.

I started out with one Dexter heifer in August and a little Dexter steer. In September I added two Dexter cows, one more Dexter heifer, and another little Dexter bull calf. Up to six total animals if you are counting. Now, it is October so I guess I should add some more. I'll be going to look at some next week ... maybe bring home three Dexters ... maybe bring home seven Dexters ... we will just have to wait and see!

Okay, so yeah they are addicting!

I feel the same way about my goats! Never expected to get this attached to them. Now I can't imagine not having them.

I must have an addictive personality also--because I can never have just one of anything! Animals are the perfect 'medication' for me.. A calf, sheep, goat, chicken, --it doesn't matter...Queen Bee

When I bring home a new critter I tell DH that if it doesn't produce we can just put it in the freezer. I mention "free range" and "grass fed" and "hormone free" and any other catchphrase that seems appropriate. It worked real well for the Dexters and goats and laying hens, but I think he got a little suspicious when I brought home silkies
