Has anyone ever donated to Locks of Love?
My hair is getting as long as I've ever had it. The problem is that all I do is wear it in a ponytail. If I wear it down it gets tangled or in my face. Not to mention little ones love to play/pull it. I'm thinking of donating it to Locks of Love or some other organization like that.
Has anyone else ever donated their hair?

Both dd's have donated. They sell it if they can't use it to cover the costs of making the wigs.

I've done it twice! But you MUST MUST MUST go to someone who knows how to properly cut your hair for the donation or all your hair could be wasted. Major bummer for a friend of mine who didn't realize the hair has to be cut in sections to be "good."

Go for it, I donated mine back in '02.(24") The barber I went to would do the cuts for free. If I ever grew my hair out again, I'd do it again.

We have a Great Niece who at the age of 9 donated hers after her Dad (my nephew)passed from leukemia. Her hair was past waist length and it was HER idea to donate.

My son has been doing it for years. He goes to a place that cuts free if you donate it.
He always felt it something he could do when he was too poor to give in any other way. He's no longer in that position but stills enjoys knowing he's helping a child somewhere.

Both of my daughters and myself have donated to locks of Love. My daughters go to school with a young girl who is recovering from an illness that the treatment made her loose her hair.

My daughter has donated quite frequently. The hair does have to be cut properly and another important factor is that it has to be healthy and not processed (no perms, dyes, highlights and such).

My daughter and I are both doing it. I think her's will be ready before mine will! LOL.
I figure by December we'll be able to cut.

My daughter had long hair with hot pink streaks dyed into it. When she decided to have her hair cut short, she went to a salon that cut for Locks of Love & asked if they would take hers with the pink stripes. The salon was real happy to get it!! They said they were certain there was someone who'd LOVE pink hair.

I've done it a few times. There may be a link on the LOL website to salons that will give you the cut free.

My 13yo and 9 yo dds just did this in August. They decided two years ago that they were not going to cut their hair (just little healthy trims) until it was long enough to donate. Their hair is now shorter (chin length on the 9yo and barely shoulderlength for the 13yo) than it has been since they were tiny!

I donated several years ago, I knew there was a possibility that they would sell it if they couldn't use it. I think most salons will cut for free if you tell them they are donating it. I can no longer donate as I'm getting gray hairs now. I thought you had to have at least 12", I had mine cut about 14" to be sure. They braided mine in sections before cutting.

My eldest daughter donated at age 12. The cut sections were over 18" long (and THICK). It took her a while to grow it out again, but it was her idea and she was happy having short hair for a little while.

My 3 DDs have each donated. My 12 y.o. is getting ready to donate for the 3rd time. Her hair grows very fast. They usually recieve a certificate in 6-8 weeks for a keepsake.

My hair was NOT cut in sections as the instructions from Locks of Love was that it needed to be in a ponytail (not washed) and clipped off in one large bunch.
PLEASE check the details and yes, go to a place that knows how to do it.
I donated about 6 months ago, 12 inches of hair.

Hey;
DD did last year...her hair was to mid calf and she took it up to her shoulders...LOTS o' hair!! And totally white blonde the entire length. Now she wants to grow it to mid back and knowing her it will be there by spring!! We just had to provide the envelope and they mailed it off (The hair cut place....)
I cannot for I change my color far toooo often! Going down that aisle in the store is like a walk thru the chocolate aisle for others!!! teehee!!! Maybe one day I will stop....nah!!!!!!!
