I think I messed up

My Norton Anti-Virus was not working properly, so I had the bright idea that I would just uninstall it and then reinstall it. I still have 184 days left on my subscription. So I put the disk in the computer and it won't load. I looked on the disk and the papers with it and it doesn't say what to type in to make it start loading. Am I just going to have to buy a new one?

Contact the company. They will walk you through the reinstall or tell you what to do.

Melissa,

I have Norton Anti-Virus, and I wish I didn't!! The X-BF put it on my computer and subscribed for THREE YEARS. From what I understand when you attempt to uninstall it not all of it uninstalls and can cause problems when re-installing or attempting to install different anti-virus software.

I assume it's a CD?
If so, open "My Computer"
look for the CD drive, usually D
Double click on D, that should start the autorun, but if not, it'll open the folder.
Look for a file called Setup.exe and double click that.

Norton makes a removal tool.
Go here to get it.

Oh bummer, Melissa! Sorry to hear that.

I wish I could tell you something encouraging. I'd try calling them if I were you.

But my experience with North Anti-Virus is a nightmare; they ripped me off with a product that would never load to our computers, as well as me having to spend hours a day for several days with their technical support - which is IN INDIA! And then they promised to refund my money, which they ultimately never did.

I'd never recommend their product to anyone.

You don't have to buy anything, just get the free AVG Free Edition as well as free Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security. I haven't paid for protection for years. Abandon the Norton.

Shepard,

Yep, nothing but bad stuff with Norton here also, the x-bf accidently downloaded a virus, when I called them to get rid of it (that is what they do RIGHT?) I had to pay them an additional $78.00 to get rid of this particular virus. When I ask them WHAT was I paying for with the three year virus contract, their response was "not that particular virus"...WHAT!?!

Norton isn't worth the money. Too many conflicts and problems.

I use avast! (The ! is part of the name.)

Yep - I agree with you totally. My stance on Norton Anti-Virus is - they stink! Ripoff artists. I'll use the AVG Free Edition.

You can also go to the control panel and click on "add or remove program" on the left of the screen click on add program and then click on add from a cd.

A few years back Norton screwed up our computer so bad it wouldn't do anything. We did get our money back and I actually used "Regedit" to remove all traces of anything related to Norton from our system. Funny, before we removed it, nothing worked. As soon as it was removed, without making any other changes, it worked like a brand new, lightening fast system. We used Avast! antivirus and Comodo firewall.

I got fed up with having to deal with a support team based in India.... I use AVG free edition and have for 4 years. I recommend it highly! Plus, the price is right!!

They couldn't pay me to have Nortons or McCafee.

When Pelenaka and I first got married we went a few months with my computer in storage. One of the stepchildren went somewhere they weren't supposed to and promptly picked up a virus that just permanantly froze up the machine. This was right after updating the Nortons. We just pulled my machine out of mothballs and fired it up. Some day we'll get her machine fixed, just to pull all her pictures off of it. But, we're in no hurry.

I've been running AVG free edition for about 4 years now and love it. The only thing that annoys me is it's updating every time I boot up the computer. But, maybe that's why I've never caught a virus in all that time.
