Today was our DS19 appointment with the admissions counselor with the Job Corps. As of 10:15 this morning, he is signed up and awaiting admission (anywhere from 0 -12 week wait)
After much soul searching and several discussions with some seasoned veterans of the work force (dad, grandpa, uncle and a few of dad's friends) he decided on FORESTRY -- Carpentry as a second choice... and cement masonry as a third choice. The particular center he chose has a 85% pre-graduation placement rate!!! Being in Oregon, he will have his choice of a LOCAL forestry job, a STATE forestry job or even FEDERAL forestry jobs. She was very optimistic about the vocation, the job openings available in the state and even out of state and he is SOOOO jazzed!! His center is about 3 1/2 hours from us, but he can take Greyhound round trip to visit if/when he wants -- (so many choices to do at the center - only center in the area with an Olympic sized pool and movie theater on site, he doubts he'll be TOO homesick!!) I AM SO RELIEVED to hear him say that!!!
His original choice of Protective services was eliminated when the only center that offered that choice only offered one other choice he was interested in. He wanted to make sure he attended a center that had a variety of vocations to chose from! (they can change vocations, but can't change centers)
He also has an internship with the local parks department to fill in some of the wait time.... He's going to work with the local horticulture department!!

(He has been volunteering with the Parks Department and she put him in touch with the internship)
I am so VERY proud of him!!!
