Talking I'm 46 years old, and This is a FIRST for me!!

I'm 46 years old, and This is a FIRST for me!! - Countryside Families

My first, brand-new lawn-mower. I've repaired and used junk all of my life, but after fighting with my 30 year old snapper for an hour yesterday, and then mowing half my property in about 3 hours, I felt like I'd been beaten with a stick...so...

I went down to the local hardware, where my best friend works on mowers for a living and I said to him, "I'm NOT going to spend $5000.00 on a mower. What's the BEST mower for the money in the $1000.00 range?"

He said, "Go to Sears and buy a Craftsman. They're the best you can get in that price range. They have Briggs motors, and I like them better than kholers. Also, don't get one larger than 42" cut, because sometimes bigger decks and 3 blades are really hard to get level."

So, that's what I did...$1066.00...20 horse...42 inch cut...mows GREAT! It Has headlights and a cupholder!

Good Moove!

Can see you now: racing around the yard at night, coffee in hand, and a great big grin on your face.

(Hope you're not a smoker - the ashtrays on those things don't work well...or is that what you're using as a cup holder?)

It's nice! We have the older version of that one, I think it's 10 years old and still purrs like a kitten.

Boy did you get some good advice! I have a 52" deck on a Murray that has been a pain from the get-go, and a Craftsman, 21 hp, 42" deck that I have had very few problems out of. Since I'm only taking one when I move, guess which one I'll be selling?

Congrats!

My dad has owned Craftsman riding mowers for as long as I can remember. I think he has had 3 total since 1977, mowing over an acre of rough ground. He still has 2 of them. He has had very few problems over the years. Good choice on mowers!!!

I can relate to your new mower....I bought a brand new Lawn Boy 9 years ago, after messing with hand-me-downs and wrenching half a day just to mow. I felt so grown up, even though I was 29 or 30 at the time.

Clove

Don't give him any ideas! The one time I lived in town as an adult I had a neighbor who mowed his yard at night - about three times a week. And he was a retired man.

Happy mowing !

Congrats!

If you decide to mow at night and your property is anything like ours, make sure you have an extra set of blades on hand to replace the knicked or bent ones you might soon have.

I think they put the lights on those things just so they can sell more blades.

Voice of experience. By the way, a new mower deck is $350-$700 depending on the brand. But you have to be really determined to bend one of those.

Talking Thanks Oggie...

My terrain isn't rocky or stumpy, just a few steep places...but I'll sure do like you said and be careful at night...

How many of those decks have you had to buy?

I waited till I was 48 to get the same exact mower. Sure does make short work out of a large yard!
Congrats on your purchase. What will you name it?
Oh, and is that pic done by an inexperienced photographer? cause I remember much more lifelike pics being posted by you.

One.

There was a small stump next to a hole. The deck went over the stump and the wheel went into the hole. The mower went "CLUNK!" as the blades stopped instantly. When I restarted the mower, the blades turned, but the whold mower went "widgety widgety". It was better than one of those vibrating beds you find in cheap hotels.

I replaced the blades. It wouldn't cut level. Finally, I took the whole deck apart and realized it was bent. I could never get it pounded straight, so I spent $400 for a new one and switched all the parts out.

I took my frustration out on the stump.

Read all the safety literature and follow it to the letter. (Yeah, right. Then you can cut that three-foot strip of high-quality grass in that level section.)

Good luck. Be as safe as you can!

That's a beautiful ride Boleys, and thanks for sharing the advice from your lawn mower expert friend.

Hugs,
