Companies that hire Military?
I am looking for companies that like to hire military. My 21 year old DS is recently out and will start a Vo-Tech program in January, but until that time is looking for a good hourly wage. Home Depot seems to try to do good by vets, and he has filled out the online application.
Does anyone have experience working for Home Depot? How much do they pay and will they offer full time work with benefits?
Does anyone know of any other company he should take a look at? We are in Oklahoma City. Other than his military experience, he is a high school graduate.
Thanks in advance, Kimberly

He might try looking for a job with a state agency or state university. In our state, vets are oftentimes given a priority, especially with the agencies. Best wishes.

The government gives priority to ex-military, that would be much better than Home Depot IMO. Most of the civillians on base are veterans too, some of those jobs (the ones that veterans take) pay very well.
Retail is very demanding work - everyone should try it at least once just to learn what their fellow human beings are really like, but I would try to guide him away from that.

Blackwater pays very well for ex military. If he's into that kind of work.

Hey.
The Post Office gives preferential treatment to military. Government jobs do too.

The Sheriff's office here in Phoenix had an advertisement out awhile back encouraging former military members to apply for jobs. Maybe something similar is in place where you live.

Military preference for correctional officers. County, state and federal, live where you want, urban or rural, facilities are everywhere. Some states don't pay too well and some states have excellent pay.

Not really related to the question but I thought I would mention it though. If DS had ANY medical issues while on active duty then he should file a claim with the VA. When I say any I mean it. Twisted ankle, hurt back, surgery, etc... The DAV, American Legion, and probably a few other organizations can help with the paper work.

U.S. Post Office likes to hire vets and all time served in the military is carried over and applied to seniority once hired. The railroads all are having a big push to hire now and for the next few years as so many of their employees are due to retire. I got this info from my B-I-L. He works and has worked for Milwaukee road and now Metra(a comuter line near chicago) since he was 18 yrs. old and is himself due to retire in 2 yrs. My neice has just graduated from conductor school and is now working for Metra she is a US Navy vet.

Wow, you guys are awesome. Thanks so much for the great leads. So many things I had not thought of. I looked yesterday and the state does have a form that bumps you up the list for state jobs if you are ex-military.
Thanks a million for all of your suggestions, I knew I could count on my friends here at HT!

Might also help if you could tell us what type job he did in the military. I still have a ton of contacts with military contractors who are always hiring and paying dang good money.

He was a Patriot Missile Operator, MOS 14T. He has current secret security clearance. He knows that there are many jobs available where there are government contracts, but he wants to be in Oklahoma City right now as he was gone for 3 years. Any help or information you had would be great.
Thanks again, Kimberly

Have him check with Fed. Aviation Admin. They do their radar training and continuing education out of Oklahoma City.
I think you'll find that most companies will have a preference for veterans even if the service training isn't relevant to the job.
