I know this is a stupid question!

Why do people talk about putting food in trees to keep it away from bears when I always see pictures of bears climbing trees?

Baby bears climb trees. The claws on grown bears are too long to climb well, at least that is what I've heard. Ever notice you're not as flexible now as when you were six?

The food is suspended by a rope from a tree limb. Not fool-proof but it's the best you got in the woods.

Usually they're talking about hanging the food with a rope from a tree limb so the food pack dangles in the air high enough so the bear cannot reach it....and we all know that bears cannot climb ropes!

This is only true for grizzly bears. All black bears climb well.

I'm not sure if those pictures surprise or amuse me... perhaps he is a wannabe circus bear, longing for discovery?
Were those taken at your place?

Thanks, I'll only climb a tree to escape a bear once I've ascertained it is a grizzly.

Best way to escape a black bear is to yell at it LOL! They generally run like a rabbit.

Thank you - so it is sort of hanging in space so the bear can't get to it, rather than in the tree itself?

Cabin Fever - I love the pictures - especially the one where he is holding on with his front paws and teeth.

if i'm not mistaken, those pics are from sudbury, ontario canada near from here....last week my neighbours mom found a black bear in her pool having a dip...

less places for the to hide here and on top of that, no more spring hunt...so we have a massive bear population explosion...

It's also important that, when hiking in bear country, it's important to always hike with a buddy.

That way, if there's bear trouble, you won't have to run fast enough to out run the bear. You'll only have to run fast enough to our run your buddy.

Great black bear pictures! What self-respecting bear would steal bird seed from a birdfeeder, and then, realizing he had been caught starts doing pull-up to cover his nefarious deed?
