Goofy Things Families Do
I have a theory that families who do goofy things together are more likely to be close and remain close over time. It works with couples, too.
More proof, if we needed it, that my family and I are a little weird -- we just spent the last two hours spelling out every word we spoke to each other.
It started out with just an ordinary spelling review - they both have tests each Friday. Then we got totally carried away, even my 8 year old son was doing it, and actually doing quite well! The game kept everyone in a good mood, even when it was time to spell out G O T O B E D N O W!!!! S W E E T D R E A M S!
I'd left some laundry I didn't put away on my son's bottom bunk, and he fussed at me, and I had to tell him G O S L E E P O N T H E T O P B U N K. He replied, H U H M O M? I said, U P! He said "ewww! You pee in bed!" Gosh, it's just a barrel of monkeys around here.
What are some goofy things you family does?

Oh goodness. I love being goofy with the kids. Sometimes I will start talking to the kids like KO-KO from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. It is all in the tone and inflection of your "ko-ko's". It is a scream. It reminds me of that whole conversation of "Dude's" from Dude Where's My Car. Anyway, we also have been known to have minor food fights, water fights and jump-out-from-behind-something fights. One time the girls and I chased John around the house threatening to put make up on him. He locked himself in the bathroom. I had Devon go turn on the theme music from The Pirate's of the Carribeian (sp) really loud on the computer and we had great fun acting all pirate-y with poor John locked up in the bathroom. I eventually picked the lock (flashback from my wild mis-spent youth) and we squirted him with water bottles. Poor kid! I have been known to purposly side swipe the plastic trash cans in my van too. But my all time favorite thing to do is to move something of the kids' and act like I didn't do it. I have been known to take it too far though, and had John scared, thinking that he had just imagined making himself a bowl of ice cream. *giggle* Ok, my folks were much older than I am... my mom was in her 40's when I was born and they did not play with us much and I want my kids to know that even though I could not give them very many material thing, I can give them love. And for me that is being goofy with them sometimes. Great topic, I can't wait to be inspired by y'all!!!
God bless you and yours
Deb

We each have our own theme musci we hum when we are up to something. LOL
We got that from Emperor's New Grove movie from Disney. And when one of us does it, another always says...."Geeze, he has his OWN theme music?!?!?" LOL
Yea, we are strange.
God Bless,
Michele

You all are mind kind of people! We love to be silly. We make up funny songs about our day. Yesterday my son wanted to sleep on the futon, so we made up a mariachi song called, "I can't believe I'm sleeping on the futon". We also talk a made up language to each other. For example: "Dooton marnin Bubbasita. Dooton marnin Mamamazheo. How do boom? Boombahdeeosh." translated: "Good morning baby. Good morning mama. How are you? Fine." Sometimes we do goofy things like eat ice cream cones for breakfast and then make a big deal out of keeping it a secret. Then all day we make a funny hand signal that signifies an ice cream cone and laugh hysterically because it's our little secret!

We like to play sugar packet football while we are waiting for our food at restaurants. (Not fancy ones of course...the sugar packet doesn't slide well on nice linens...)

I don't know how this started, but whenever I buy a special treat for the kids I give it to them one at a time, and make a big production over making it a secret. We also have hand signals, and funny winks. But I try and call each one into the kitchen individually and tell them to keep it a secret. It doesn't last though because we all end up in the living room winking at eachother.
We have also done "pirate day" before, lol.
Our favorite family joke is getting someone to say "underwear" You know, "what IS that under there?" "under where?" very cheesy but we laugh every time.

I'm so glad we aren't the only nuts! We go frog hunting, using an ice chest for the capture cage. We've gotten some pretty strange looks when we all jump from the car to grab a big'un!
What makes me sad are the families that have no strangeness. Well, I guess that in itself is strange!

If someone is a poet and didn't know it (accidentally rhyming) then the rest of the day has to be rhymed.
When the oldest was learning letter sounds we would have "T" day or "S" day where everything we ate or said had to have that letter prominently featured. It was so much fun that every now and then I serve a weird breakfast and they have to figure out what "day" it is and carry it on throughout the day
We also do treasure hunts pretty regularly. One child will wake up and find a clue and a treat in his shoe or under his pillow or something. His clue assigns the next person and directs them to another treat and a clue. The second person is then assigned a third person and they go hunt. Every child ends up with 2 treats and some fun.

That's a good one. My kids started this game of trying to get someone to say "what" and telling them "you have to get rid of that word now." You have to try and make someone else say "what?"
I love the rhyming idea! I think we'll try that one next. Sort of like living inside a Dr. Seuss book.
My kids loved the spelling thing so much that they even did it this morning, and I'd be willing to bet my daughter's been pulling it on her friends at school today. What's really funny is they don't know how much they are learning by doing this! My kids are such great spellers!
Sometimes I really wish I was homeschooling, because I can come up with so many fun ways to teach, and I think I'd be good at it. DS wants to. I can't convince DD to give it a try. Maybe we'll try a mini-session over the summer.

We play restaurant... complete with waiters and tips.
We have 'parties' many Sunday evenings, with fingerfoods and silly, non-alcoholic mixed drinks (a big pitcher of smoothies). Starts the week off fun, as a family.
Each person has a distinctive sound they make when they come though the door... then, without looking, we all know who's home... it's the sweetest thing... Started the day after we married, with my husbands "mfffpt' when he came though the door... now each has his own.

Sometimes we can be the goofiest family we know!
Sometimes DH and I don't talk, we just grunt at each other. We have impromptu dances. We talk like the characters in "King of the Hill". My dd is an expert belcher. Then there's passing gas... My older ds (10) is constantly asking me absurd questions and teasing me. My younger ds (5) calls me his "wife". Just a few examples of everyday craziness. :banana02:
I think your theory is right on, Edayna. I don't remember ever being silly together as a family when I was growing up and we're not really that close now.

My DD6mos has started growling...? She thinks it's SOOOO fun, and it sounds so cute. So there we were today, rolling around on the bed growling, shreiking and tickling and playing "kiss the baby" where everyone is the baby. It was that or put laundry away. We sure got our exercise!
