Moving or not?

that is the question we are stuck asking ourselves. the land beside us has been bought. There are plans to develop it. don't know if it will be a strip mall, a grocery store, storage building, or what. Right now they plan on leaving the pond.....so they say. they've been pestering us for a year now. I say pestering cause its nothing definite, just every few weeks the developer comes around to talk to dh about what they're going to do and to ask if we want to sell. We've already given him an estimate of what we want. we've also been in the process of adding on to the house. Nothing is definite about them buying us and in the mean time we NEED more space. So this Saturday supposedly they (the developer and whoever id doing the developing) are coming back to talk yet again and confirm yet again that we will sell. come on people how many darn times do you have to be told? either buy us out or shut up. the developer knows that I'm fed up with this. I told him so the last time he was here. I'm not opposed to selling.......i think it would be great. We could get further out where they're not putting in 200-300 new mcmansions a month and have a little privacy. traffic here has gotten awful. The developer whined when he last talked to me about having to drive 3 1/2 miles to a grocery store. If I hadn't been biting my tongue so hard already I'd have walked over to one the chicken coop, grabbed one, and handed it to him so he didn't have to drive anymore.........personally 30 minutes to anything sounds good to me! so since I am not going to conform to the mcmansion mindset moving will be good. I just wish they'd quit talking it into the ground and actually do something. That way I could be preparing. What's the use of starting to pack if we're not moving? what's the use of looking for land if we're not moving. why keep adding on to this house if we are moving? I hate being in limbo!

Do you think they're dragging their feet expecting you to get frustrated and sell for less money? I've seen shows on TV where the real estate developers did all kinds of dirty tricks hoping to wear down the land owners.

I'd have a sales agreement prepared with all of your conditions including the price you want. Have the contract be for a specific time frame, say 30 to 45 days. In the contract state that if they don't make a firm offer within that time frame you are withdrawing the offer or increasing the price by $XYZ since you'll have put more work and money into your addition.
I hope it works out for you.

dh is planning on that. supposedly they are definitely closing on the land beside us in 55 days. at some point they're supposed to offer us cash $ to consider selling and we need to give them a time frame. Then after that they come back with more $ and we set a time to close. Dh says the sooner the better although we'll still be looking at 6 months he thinks before we would/could move. We will start looking as soon as they both show up and start serious (in my opinion) talks. when cash comes in then i go into overdrive finding land. dh says at this point just find the land we want and we'll buy a double wide and put on it. he just wants the land and out of here. then he can slowly build whatever he wants he says. I'm not sure about the doublewide part though.......although we're both in our 40's so it might just last us.

Ginnie-

So sorry for the disruption in your life. We have 20 ac & it took us 3 years to find it. Both sides had established homes/neighbors. But across the back is 25 open ac. We worried that a developer would buy & put 50 homes there. Finally a family of homeschooled kids & 6 horses bought & moved in! A Godsend!

Can you move your home to wherever you buy? Well, I'm sure that's a possibility but may be cost prohibitive. Just a thought.

Good luck-Patty

On one commercial real estate development that I was involved in, the developer not only paid the price for the land and house, but moved the house to the Seller's new land at no expense to the Seller. (A GREAT DEAL for the Seller!). The Seller got paid for the house and still kept it!

Ginnie,

I feel your pain too. We bought 42 acres out in the country a few years ago. We've just starting building the house that we thought we'd stay in forever. And just last week the planning commission decided to give special permits to a developer to build 1500 houses down the road from us in what was a "low density growing area" (because he donated some of his land to the county) --> and I mean a hop, skip and jump down the road will be this mega subdivision. Uggghhhh...

So what was once a quiet country road will turn into McMansions with noisey cars, tons of house lights instead of shining stars to look at & kids to make our schools even more crowded than they are now.

We are very disappointed but for now we just continue to build and hope for the best. We're lucky at this point if we'll last 10 years in the new house.

you know what really gripes me about all of this is they have NO consideration for the people whose lives they are disrupting. I mena so what that they want to bull doze our home so they can put in a parking center shopping lot. We're just supposed to be thrilled and ok with it. If this was the ideal place i probably would just meet them at the door with a shotgun but its not perfect....far from it. Dh won't even consider moving the house. I'm just tired of the constant not knowing. Hopefully the guy will show up Saturday and we'll know something one way or another. In the meantime I have to motivate myself to finish the chicken pen I NEED for the new chicks and get the old coop moved because its too close to the property line. When we built it we really didn't think we'd have to move it anytime in the forseeable future so we put it very close to the line.
