Medical info request - urgent

My neighbor had a crate dropped on his foot, (just above the ball of the foot), the wound has spread with very rapid patterns, I have seen battlefield wounds that did not spread this fast. It is totally red with the upper skin destroyed, its oozing a clear fluid. The size has increased from a nickle size this morning to a quarter size this afternoon.

I have convinced him to go to a medical service site tonight, any idea what spreads this fast and causes the puffiness? His big toe is numb, the puffiness is about as big as a baseball at this time.

Seeing the responses here will totally convince him to seek medical attention right now.

Sounds like possible infection as well as wound trauma, Get to an emergency room/hospital ASAP. I suspect there are broken/crushed bones as well as other problems. DO NOT DELAY.. I am a fire fighter/first responder... Andy

The numbness in the toe MIGHT be caused by swelling. The increase in wound size MIGHT be caused by infection.

And, oh yes. When my foot swelled like that, I had BROKEN my stupid heel!

On the back of a friend's leg I once saw a spider shaped dark area. I told him and he found a little splinter in the middle. The next day it was a big spider area. He went to the doc and found it was blood poisoning and doc said in another day or two he could lose the leg or worse. It spreads fast.

I think he would prefer the term 'repair'.

Any foot damage should be looked at PRONTO! There is always a chance the person could be diabetic and not know it! Hate to see anyone lose a foot or a leg!!!!

So much of that necrotizing cellulitis and fascitis out there, and the so-called 'flesh eating bacteria'. It can spread extremely fast. Hope your neighbor is doing well and getting good care.

A friend of mine got the flesh eating bacteria at a time when her immune system was compromised. It took only 48 hours to kill her.

I'm glad it's ok. My friend's mom got an injury on her foot in Florida and spent three months in the hospital when the skin started to rot. Very bad.
