Its My Pickup!!!

Ok I was taking my FIL to the Lake and was towing my Boat. When I started my Pickup I automatically shut my Overdrive off.My FIL turns it back on He says you don't have to turn it off.

I don't care! It wasn't hurting anything being off.But because he is older and suppose to be wiser I left it on.But it was all I could do to leave it on

Rockpile
what does the Over Drive button off do for you?

I have that button on my car and usually it stays on. Of course, I don't haul anything either.

Not suppose to have it on if your towing or hauling. They say it will mess the Transmission up.Like I say it wasn't hurting anything being off

thanks for the info, Rockpile.

I'll have to pull out the car's manual and read up more on this, especially if I ever have a reason to haul/tow something.

My Chevy truck has a OD lock out button for towing. I always put the shift lever in 3 and not OD. I see no difference.

You are correct Rockpile. The overdrive really should not be on even for around town, stop and go driving. The Overdrive "plate" will spin and spin, disingage, try to work, when it's not needed and that's a great way to wear it out. Really depends on how fast you're going to go.

Over 40 mph, crusing down the road, turn it on. On column shifts, D for Drive around town, and D with a circle around it, overdrive, for getting up and going. I had 2 brothers growing up, one raced funny cars. I also worked for a while as a mechanics helper in a shop, getting greasy, helped with some transmissions. I don't know allot about those 'button' overdrives. How do they work?

No solution, but I can sure relate. It's like it's become his mission in life to disagree with me on every subject. His "proof" of being right is how loud he gets.

I have to put my 2 cents in... hauling in overdrive is BAD
If its something lightweight ok it probably wont hurt, BUT anything that will put any kind of load on it it a NONONO. How do I know this you say.....
We just had to put a new transmission in our truck after my MECHANIC husband forgot and left it in Overdrive while we were hauling a heavy load a lond distance. OUCH OUCH OUCH. That trannsmision was OVER $1500 to replace and that is with my husband doing the labor.... Ours is an 89 Chevy so I cant imagine what a newer truck would cost. YUCK!

We have a Chrysler Town and Country van that the previous owners learned to turn off the overdrive in this part of the country after replacing the transmission. It had a brand new transmission when we bought it. In the hills and hollers overdrive is NOT a good thing. We lock out the overdrive three of our vehicles until we get to the flatlands. The truck and van both will haul light loads up a small grade in overdrive with no problem but we kick it in and out depending on strain and engine rpm. Just common sense.

My FIL is like that too. Drive both DH (his son) and me nuts. He always thinks he knows better, and will simply butt in and DO things, and then say something like "it doesn't matter" or some stupid comment.

FIL has wrecked more things in his life, and the final result for most of his projects looks horrible, we condisider him and MIL to be good negative indicators (if they like or are for something, we run the other way).

My husband is an only child. I'm so glad we know live 400 miles away. They keep talking about moving south, Texas or Florida - we keep hoping . . .

Seriously, other than being related, we have nothing in common with my inlaws.

Cathy

Some automatic transmissions work off the thermostat also (don't ask me why) and they will slip if the engine is not heated up really good prior to going. So get them warmed up really good so's your thermostat opens before going in cold weather. And sometimes, if you're lucky, you can just replace a bad thermostat instead of the tranny, if it's just slipping. Dosen't hurt to check first.

Anyone know how those buttom OD's work? It's not like actually putting it in another gear on a column. My husband has one in his 2001 Dodge pickup. I taught him how to use overdrive when he drove my 83 Chevy pickup.

My dad had a push-buttom on the dash transmission in his 63-64? Plymouth Fury.

Mash on the dash!
As opposed to: 4 on the floor or 3 on the tree.

It's kind of you to be so tolerant of the FIL. I'm sure the car won't mind you doing that a couple of times for him...after all, he won't live forever.

You CAN tow in Overdrive as long as its not constantly shifting in and out. It depends on the load and the terrain more than anything. NOT using overdrive burns more gas At highway speeds on level roads it doesnt hurt it at all to tow in overdrive Also, ANY tow vehicle should have a transmission oil cooler to prevent overheating

I turn my overdrive off when I'm towing anything substantial. If the trailer is empty and I'm on the way to get something loaded, I'll leave the OD on.

As for dealing with family, you know best for your household. I'd never tell another person how to manage/drive their own truck...or car either.

Exactly. My E150 van has the overdrive button and I turn it on once I go over 40 mph. Of course, most of the roads I have to travel are double laned highway with a speed limit of 55 to 60. My dad taught me this. Once I drop under 40 I will turn the overdrive off and I can feel a bit of a pull slowing the vehicle down and I don't have to brake as much either.

Rock, its your truck. Do what you feel you should do. I know that is hard when you have a realitive who thinks they know "everything."

Been towing boat, camper, atv triler and a covered trailer with tools for 88,000 miles in OD, and haven't had a problem.

I turn the OD off when going down long steep grades at hiway speeds, especially on curvy roads-saves on brake wear.

Depending on the shift points of your truck, it would've been fun to drive at about 30-35 mph (so it wouldn't shift to OD) and wait for your FIL to become impatient. Simply explain to him that until that button gets pressed again to shut off the overdrive, you're not going to drive any faster.
