Road Trip Snacks?

Okay, we're heading out on a nearly 1300 mile road trip.

I'm loading up the snacks right now. So far, I'm bringing coffee (have milk frozen in small canning jars); fruit cocktail in jars; celery and carrot sticks; cheese.

Any other suggestions for Road Food that's not too fatty or salty, that will keep us alert without weighing down our brains?

TIA,
Pony!

Whole grain crackers. I prefer Wheat Thins.

cheese chunks--I buy a block of cheese and then cut it into either cubes or thick slices.

another vote for whole wheat crackers. Wheat thins are a favorite here too, especially the tomato basil ones!

Grapes are good finger food too

Hmmm, I appear to be a bigger salt nut than most of the folks here. For long drives: Pepperidge Farm cracker quartet (hey, I like a little variety) and some nuts (almonds, cashews or peanuts). Plus water and coffee, and I'm good to go!

When we do road trips, I take whole grain tortillas, fill with chicken salad and some raw spinach, cut in half and bag them up. That can be done up any way you like, cream cheese and fillers of any choice works well. I also toast up bread, smear with PB and honey, make a sandwhich and cut in 1/4ths long wise (like fingers). I second the bananas, and we also have grapes. I cut up apples and drizzle with lime juice to keep them from browning. I also will make up "bean dogs", using black beans, mushrooms, onions, celery, egg, and bread crumbs or cracker crumbs as binders and seasons I'll instead of "burger patties" make finger shaped bean patties, cook up in some oil of choice until cooked through and nicely browned.

I always keep a case of bottled water in the trunk, and roadtrips are no exception, unless I need some Iced Tea then I'll buy it.

I keep things in "rationed" amounts so we only get out a small amount and not over indulge at one time. Reese

I think everyone is hitting on my favorites. I know you are watching the salt and fat but I like to also have a jar of dry roasted peanuts and some really good firm cold sweet apples and chedder cheeze with Wheathins. I grow tired of highway restaurants real fast so nothing satisfies me better than then getting off the road and buying some of the best honey baked ham or turkey slices and swiss on a good bun that I put together on the run. Have a safe trip.

Pony, If you find anything better than the breakfast burritoes on McDonalds Dollar menu, bring some home for me.
You need to use the rest room anyway.

Okay, so far I have made tuna noodle salad (and a good batch it is!), popcorn, cheese chunks, and meatballs. (I was making meatloaf for dinner, and decided to make some little meatballs to take along.)

Got nuts and raisins; already have water to go in the car. Need to pick up some crackers, though. Wheat thins ARE tasty, and the tomato basil are the best!

I knew you would all have some great ideas to help me!!

Okay... Still have to go get the rental, and it's snowing like mad. Argh. I hate it when the weather slows me down, especially when I'm trying to make up time from being sick.

Great thread! DH is gonna drive our moving van 1000+ miles in 2 weeks so this is just in time

One thing he considers essential on roadtrips are just good quality deli meat & cheese slices. hard salami is a favorite. he likes to just roll up the meat & cheese & eat it plain.
