Help me find this book, please!
My neighbor (she's 70) was over here today and told me about a book that she just loved when she was a kid. She said it was "Little Michael" or "Little Mitchell" and that it was about a squirrel. I googled and found "Little Mitchell, the Story of a Mountain Squirrel" written by Margaret Warner Morely. I asked my neighbor if that was it, and she thinks it is. She had the shivers and goosebumps, she was so excited!
I can't find the actual book on-line anywhere, just an article about the author...so I was wondering if any of you had it or knew where I could find it. I'd love to get it for her. It was written in 1904, in case that rings any bells for you. Thanks so much!

Well Mammabooh....good news and bad news. As luck would have it, the Library at the University of Illinois, third largest academic library in the US., after Harvard and Yale, where I work, owns just one copy of this book. Thats the good news. The bad news of sorts is that it is in our Rare Book collection, which is guarded like Fort Knox. Depending on the physical condition of the book, it might be possible to get a photostatic copy made, but it wont be cheap. I might be able to take pictures with a digital camera of each page, but I'm not sure how well they would turn out. I will try to make some time this week to pop over to the Rare Book room and have a look see. I will also try to find out if any other library in our system owns a circulating copy that we could borrow on interlibrary loan and get copied. Drop me a PM and I will get back to you. Glad to help.

Sorry, I can't make a link, but this site lets you search many online sellers for a book.

Ive searched many of the used and rare book sources we generally use here at the Library and I have come up with nothing. The book ran to many many editions and from what I have read was often used as a text book. Margaret Warner Morley wrote several books about the Carolinas and mountain people and lore and some of her other works are available, but Little Mitchell seems to be a rare find. The Newberry Library in Chicago owns two copies but they are also in the non circulating Rare book collection.
The book isnt listed currently on EBAY but you might place a request and see if anyone turns up with a copy.
BTW: Its not a small book. Our copy of the 2nd ed (1911) runs to 230 pages.
Thats a lot of digital pictures.

No one seems to be reading the posts:

Is there some reason that copy is unacceptable?

I found 5 copies using this search engine. They are running about $50.00 each.

I don't know what HG did to find five copies, but I typed in Little Mitchell in the Title slot and Squirrel in the Keyword slot.
Here is the link to the book: http://www.biblio.com/books/59486872.html

I typed in Morley, Margaret in the Author slot and Little Mitchell in the title slot. Here's a link to the page showing the 5 hits. I hope it works

The link I posted above does indeed work. It shows the 5 copies available. This isn't rocket science, people!

Well, she doesn't seem to have much love in her life, so I thought I'd show her some.
