my oldest child

my oldest child. she's 14, going on 24. she's a beautiful child, or should i say, young lady. she's smart. she loves to drive me crazy. she surprises me sometimes. like this: a couple of weeks ago, she asked if she could volunteer at the public library. i said, well, let's go ask. so we did. she was supposed to go last sat, but the snow kept us home. so yesterday i took her to the library in the morning, and my dad picked her up a few hours later to take her christmas shopping, which is something they do together every year. well, the older lady she was helping yesterday called me last nite to tell me caitlin had left her mug at the library. since she's a neighbor, she just put the mug in her mailbox for me to pick up. while she had me on the phone, she told me how much she enjoyed having caitlin there, and how she was a fast learner and a pleasure to have around. so caitlin calls last nite (after bedtime, but she always does) from my parents house (she's spending the nite there) and tells me she had so much fun and is looking forward to next sat so she can do it again. she also got christmas presents for everyone except russell (my dh) and her dad's sister. she doesn't know what to get russell, and thought she had her aunt's already. she also chose a name of the angel tree at church. these kids are prisoner's kids, and she chose a little girl and got her some dora stuff-she loves christmas and just wanted to make it better for a little girl she doesn't even know. i love that kid.

It ALWAYS makes me feel better about growing older, knowing that young people like this will be "handling the world" after we're gone. LOL..

It's so wonderful to hear of young people of "Character, nobility & generous hearts".. God bless her !!

I wish there was a way to let Caitlyn read what you posted Laura It did my old heart good.

Hugs
Marlene

P.S. I've enjoyed Caitlyn and her siblings company and our campouts. And I agree with BostonLesley - the world will be safe in her hands.

What a lovely girl! Ahhh, there are some rewards to raising teenagers.

I had it happen to me one time that a teacher at my daughter's high school stopped me in the grocery store...this was senior year...and said, "You know, I don't know if anybody has ever told you this but your daughter is one of the nicest girls I've ever had the pleasure to teach. She's always good to everybody, very polite, enthusiastic, and fun to be around." Gee, I never even thought about it. But your post made me remember that day. Sweet rewards.

I agree, it's nice to know that there are some fine young people coming up. Seems you only hear about the ones that get in trouble sometimes. No, they're not all like that. Keep up the good work Mama! There's more to come!

Don't you just breathe a sigh of relief when someone tells you how nice your kid is?

I noticed that as kids get closer to the teen years that they seek out new parents. The man who owns the gas station, a girlfriend's mother, for instance. It sounds like the lady at the library could be one such new mom for your daughter. I was always grateful for the positive role models in the community that my kids could relate to.

thanks. she's a good kid-she's had some rough times, but she's coming through them stronger and better for it. she is a big help to me and sometimes i neglect to let her know it-i think i'll do that (after she gets the dishes done tonite... )

for some reason older people adore her-so do little children-she helped with the preschoolers in VBS this summer, and the little kids just loved her. she enjoys them, too. it's good to know that some of what i'm trying to teach them is sinking in.

You done did good!
Isn't it funny how some people have old and young gravitate toward them? It is a mixture of charm, grace and an inner light that can be seen by the weakest and most innocent I think. God Bless Her.
