My brother's playstation adventure...
Yes, my brother was one of them camping out at Walmart for these blessed Playstation 3. Now let me start with I'm not overly proud of this, but it's his life. Now let me tell you the kicker. My brother's family was also in line for these. His FIL and BIL were taking turns at #3 in line, they bought the more expensive 60mg player. It has already sold on E-Bay at a buy it now price of 9,000 dollars!!! I cannot believe that. That is just crazy!!! Now, my brother has his listed (20mg) with an opening bid price of 1,500. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE. Honestly, I cannot believe my brother is a part of this junk, but like I said it's his life. Sad...

I have never really cared how other people spent their money provided what they spent it on did not adversly affect me. It seems your brother and his in laws found a way to leverage free time into money, I hope they don't get burned on the deal.

Here is the article from the paper, the retired minister is my brother's FIL. Stephanie is my SIL, Brittany my neice...Brian wasn't there when they did this piece so he isn't in it. (Thank goodness) Dana's ex-hubby was killed this summer in a motorcycle accident and so she is doing this partly to make her son's Christmas better since his dad isn't there. I can almost understand that, but the others are just buying them to sell them. CRAZY!!!

I saw the WII this morning and told DH that at least with that video game the kids have to get up off of the couch to play it. Looked kinda fun, but I wouldn't go to great lengths to get it. In fact our video games are the 10 dollar ones that you can buy that plug right into the tv and you can play space invaders and pacman. Those are my speed.

I can't believe people shoot people for video games. Now that is not funny, but the little snippit in that where it is says a 19 year old was injured when he ran into a pole, running with 50 people to get in line. I'm sorry, but that just hits my funny bone. The man injured himself!!! HE RAN INTO A POLE!!! That's classic. How do you ever live that down.!

In several of the news clips I have seen regarding these PS3's the majority of people waiting in line appear to be Blacks and Hispanics. Shootings and stabbings just seem to follow them poor souls everywhere.....

Aren't they only making a limited number? That is why people can't get rainchecks, when they're gone, they're gone.

We have an old Gamecube - I think it had been out for a couple years when we bought it. Works great, lots of games available to buy or just rent. My kids might want this new nifty thing, but that's a game I refuse to play. I've never bought into the whole "hot toy of the season" craze; I absolutely refuse to stand in line or pay premium price tags for a popular item no matter how "cool" it is. What does that teach my kids about commercialism and materialism? Nothing good, that's for sure.

I believe they are releasing 400,000 now and then more later. Still stupid, if you ask me but to each his own.

You darn well should be proud of him! He is acting like an entrepreneur, he sees a short-term market opening up, fueled by temporary strong demand, and takes advantage of it. Good for him, just showing up is 80% of battle in life.
He may very well make a good future businessman. Who knows, he may end up providing jobs for your children when they grow up.

I think it's more likely that there is currently only a limited number available for the product launch, and that more are in the manufacturing pipeline but won't be able to be distributed in time for holiday shopping.
This often happens with new product launches when you are racing to get something out in time for a holiday or for a movie tie-in, and it's common for merchandisers to be "put on allocation". That's where the merchandisers want to buy and stock more, but the supplier has to spread around the stuff that's currently available.
It's very unusual for a manufacturer to have a truly limited production run of a product if there is money to be made with continued production. They've already sunk the cost for development and engineering. Limited production is much more common in things like cosmetic trend products or special packaging food products where the consumer interest is expected to fade within 6 weeks or so. There's not a lot of hards good manufacturers that intentionally limit their production - although some are limited by their production capacity or component supply.
The lack of rainchecks is probably due more to the fact that the merchandisers are pricing the units at a discount to generate traffic at their stores, and they have no desire to sell the rest of their playstations at so big a discount once the pipeline starts flowing and they can keep them in stock.

I wish I could have camped out in front of a store to pay a few hundred dollars for one of those. If some poor sap is willing to pay thousands of dollars for one on ebay, I wouldn't feel the least bit guilty turning a profit on a playstation. It's easy money!

Some poor sap was willing to BID thousands of dollars. It remains to be seen if they pay, and whether or not their check bounces.
Easy money is often risky money - and the playstation frenzy will bring out the con artists.
