I always find these types of threads, both amusing and sad at the same time.
In the end, it really is all about the parents and the children suffer accordingly.
I had to laugh at myself, with a feeling of irony, from my high school kids show choir variety show, this weekend.
It's a public school, but they sang a beautiful church hymn, quite awesome, I might add. I'm not Christian, but I certainly approve of good music.
My amusement came from wondering if some parents, instead of enjoying the spectacular work and talent of children, were instead seething over the complete disregard, for the separation of church and state.
I hope I was was completely wrong and no one felt that way.

It's a stupid disco song made famous by a cowboy, an indian, a policeman and a construction worker. (I'm pretty sure they were just wearing costumes to stand out from the rest of the disco crowd)
40 years later, someone thought it'd be cute for kids to dress up like the original band and sing the stupid disco song.
Unfortunately, this country has nose dived in the last few decades, and the dimwittery perpetrated by hate mongers on all sides has resulted in what I call the retardation of America.
Everybody is lurking around waiting for some "offense" they can pounce on, screech real loud and be offended in the name of their own special cause.
It's stupidity in every sense of the word.
It's going to have to stop somewhere, or we will all spend our lives being offended by nothing much.

Should be both...not that there aren't hidden meanings in the song, but as long as the meanings are hidden the kids should be fine...unless those hidden meanings subliminally turn the kids gay....

I may be wrong, and I'm not one to notice hidden meanings, but maybe it was just a song.
I know some gay people make a living being gay. It's their hobby, their whole identity, but I don't think they are all activist nitwits?

That song was popular when I was in my teens, I didn't know it had any hidden meaning until I was married with kids and even then someone had to tell me. I just thought it was an annoying song

Me too
I liked it for 5 minutes, and like a lot of other songs, I heard them too many times

You learn something new every day! I just figured YMCA was one of those songs intended to annoy and kinda filed it in the same, fingernails on blackboard category as Achy Breaky Heart.

Remember how "Puff the Magic Dragon" was taken as a pro-drug song, and "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds" was supposedly about LSD? According to the writers of the songs, nothing could be further than the truth. That doesn't mean people will stop reading in such inferences.
YMCA can be seen as a reference to the gay bathhouse scene in New York City - most likely St. Marks Baths in the east village. The Village People are supposedly from "the village" in NYC, which along with the Bowery was a hot spot for gay activity and clubs in the 1970s.
The various costumes used in the skit can be interpreted as fetish wear.
The WMCA wasn't squeaky clean straight laced always either:

I doubt that singing YMCA is going to corrupt anyone any more than singing "Puff the Magic Dragon" is going to give kids flashbacks of Vietnam.

Well now you have just ruined Puff the Magic Dragon for me!

Well, I remember the song and thought it was talking about picking up boys way back then. I was in the Navy and we all thought the same thing of what the song meant.
We all had fun with it, MOST sang along and had fun with it and evidently we must have all like it for the entertainment value because we all danced to it.
We all liked Boy George's music also even though he dressed up as a woman. My god so many songs from the 80's had gay undertones and was sang by gay artist but I to this day still listen to it. I don't go crazy thinking it's an alien takeover.
That lifestyle is not my cup of tea but served with many a gays in the military before, during and after Don't ask Don't tell. Could care less because it is not me. They were my shipmates and I trusted them with my life just like anyone else.
No way would I suggest a fun party song like YMCA cancel some young children having fun. The are kids, let them have fun. They are not suppose to figure the world out at that age. I believe it is like posted earlier, some person feels they didn't do good in life so they have to prove something now.
I'm sure many remember the song " My ding a ling" " Hold on I'm coming" and I've got big balls" LOL!!!
Now if the school was wanting them to sing "Relax" Yea, I could see some folks getting upset.

I'm just jealous at the lack of real problems some people must have to have the time to start such petty drama.
Ive never heard of a mandatory talent show either??? is this another one of those 'everyone gets a trophy' things? Not everyone has talent. Aren't talent shows horrid enough without the no-talent hacks being forced to participate?

I was a kid in the 70's and we loved to dance around to the Village People songs. I never once thought anything about their costumes (other than they were silly) and I certainly had no clue about any "secret meaning" in the lyrics.
People need to chill out and stop over-analyzing every little tiny thing that their kids do or experience. Good grief already.
This makes me think of a stand-up routine that George Carlin did ages ago. Referring to how parents now put their children on a pedestal and are so afraid of them being hurt or damaged that they can't do anything without a helmet.

These types of activities - at this age, are about participation, not talent. Some might call it learning. Many kids might be too shy to try out the stage and be in front of a crowd, without prodding, maybe even discovering that they actually like it, and want to continue.
Of course liking theatre might make one turn gay, so perhaps they should send home permission slips, for the parents to sign off on. .

i went to Y day camp in the 80's and early 90's and we sang it as a song of camp pride. i didnt know about gay or straight or any of that. it was just a song with fun arm movements, which it probably was for those little first graders too until somebody got offended.

I refuse to do the dance whenever it comes on at weddings because I get confused about which direction the "C" should go. I wonder if people think it's a silent protest against gays.

I dont understand how people think any more. Did they think the song was racist or are they the brain dead dough brains who pretend to think by saying "If I was (fill in the blank) that would offend me". Maybe it would help if someone can revive common sence... Why is stupidity so news worthy?
