OJ Simpson
OJ is in the news again, in front of the NV parole board asking for a reduction in his sentence.
I don't care what your opinion is of his guilt or innocence is from his murder trial, I always thought a 33 year sentence for armed robbery was outrageous and an obvious attempt to right a wrong from his murder trial acquittal. If he wasn't OJ Simpson, he would have gotten a couple of years, at most, for armed robbery and he would have never had the kidnapping charges thrown in. People should be prosecuted and sentenced for the crime at hand, not for past crimes they were acquitted of, even if the acquittal was bull. What's you guys' opinion of the OJ 33 year sentence for armed robbery? |
I think he's right where he belongs .
|
A couple of years, at most, for armed robbery?
Armed robbery . . . is that when someone uses a weapon and threatens death or bodily harm unless you give them something of material value? Wesley Snipes is doing 3 years for not paying his income tax. |
OJ's celebrity, works both for him and against him.
|
My mentally ill BIL got more than a couple of yeas for un-armed robbery.
|
OK...I must have been living in some alternate universe for the last five years because I had NO IDEA this had happened!
Man oh man...when someone falls off my radar, they fall ALL the way off! |
I am certainly no sentencing expert...but it does seem like a revenge sentence to me.
|
My son got 15 years for unarmed robbery. Prison release re-offender laws are the reason he didn't get 36 months. The judge was aghast and beside himself that he could do nothing to lessen the time. The state was relentless and the court appointed attorney was no help. It happens.
OJ? Sorry bud, finally payin for the crimes committed and tryin to get out of it? Ballsey. |
33 years for armed robbery doesn't seem out of line to me.

I never understood why drug dealers get so much time and pedophiles get so little.
Was OJ convicted of more than just RA. |
This is what I found when I googled average sentence for armed robbery first offense.
http://www.ask.com/question/average-...ffense-robbery "The average sentence for first offense robbery varies depending on the degree of the robbery. The average sentence for first offense robbery is a few months. For first degree robbery with a deadly weapon, a person can be sentenced to five years or more. A second offense can land a person in prison for 10 years or more. A class 2 felony robbery is punishable by three to seven years in prison. A person convicted of robbery may also be subject to hefty fines." Based on this, I would have to say that 30 years was a pretty stiff sentence for a first time out, and was most likely prejudiced by the original murder charges, for which the man was acquitted. So much for blind justice and being considered innocent until proven guilty. |
kidnapping, armed robbery and other charges for busting into a Las Vegas casino to try to reclaim items he felt were rightfully his.
He hired 5 other people to go into a casino and 'get back his stuff'. And was dumb enough to go with them. He's getting what he deserves from this crime. And perhaps Nicole's karma ran over OJ's dogma. |
To answer your question. I think a person should only be sentenced to the crime(s) they are being charged with.
I dont know what the average sentence for armed robbery is, so I googled it. Depends on the state, & priors & types of priors. Some states have a mandatory minimum if a crime is committed with a gun/weapon, on top of the robbery. I also found out he was in convicted in total of 12 different charges. Thats alot! Maybe the sentence is within reason for all the crimes he was convicted of. In light of that, maybe he did get off easy. Quote:
Im not sure if jurys can dictate the length of sentence or if thats in the hands of the judge. |
Edited, because it's too early on a Sunday morning for bad puns.

Ill donate my tax dollars for his stay,

The last 25 years of the sentence was for stupidity.:bored:

I agree that OJ was handled this way due to his previous issues. Why, no idea....after all a jury found him innocent, so by the lay of it, he shouldn't be held accountable for that.
But then again, Michael Vick spent time in jail for some silly issues as well. But so it goes I suppose, I can understand why some people are a little suspicious when it comes to the failings of our justice system. |
M.vick, really,,,,

Vick should be laying right next to the dogs he loved so much
