Rate your own intelligence

Where do you consider your place in the bell curve of intelligence to be? This is not education level but native ability to see connections and use them rationally?

See the other post on how your rate the population's intelligence.

Scott SW Ohio 07/26/13 07:32 AM

Like probably 75 percent of the American population, I would rate myself as above average!

I find it a charming quirk that individuals usually rate themselves as superior to others, no matter the subject or criteria. Last week I asked a group of our employees (about fifteen) who thought of themselves as an above-average driver. All the hands went up.

nchobbyfarm 07/26/13 07:55 AM

I couldn't answer! The option I needed wasn't available. I am the smartest! Just ask me!

tarbe 07/26/13 08:46 AM

Personal opinions regarding intelligence do not hold much water. Only empirical evidence is useful (and even that can and will be disputed).

Those of us who have been tested could share the results, but that will only lead to accusations of various sorts!

Tiempo 07/26/13 10:49 AM

A friend who is a planetary physicist of some renown once told me I was the smartest person she'd ever met, so I choose to believe her :)

In reality, though I've always been told I'm smart I'm a poor test taker and have a disorganized mind which I feel holds me back.

99% of people have an inflated opinion of their own intelligence . I dare say every one of us knows someone that is definitely at least a little lacking & doesn't have a clue that they are .

There was a time when I knew a couple things, one was that I was terribly forgetful, and now I have forgotten what the other one was.

I've noticed stupid people don't know they're stupid. I guess that's why I voted myself above average.

Harry Chickpea 07/26/13 07:16 PM

The question is a troll of egos. The issue for me is that I am NOT intelligent enough. How that relates to anyone else is irrelevant.

78Parrothead 07/26/13 08:06 PM

I was tested in high school and am a couple points shy of genius. But I'm lazy with it.

A lot of people resent intelligent people, so you have to be careful who you tell. I'm a good test taker, so I score well on IQ tests. Does that make me intelligent? I don't think so, based on that alone. I'm also good at a lot of other things, and can do most anything I really put my mind to, so based upon that, I consider myself above average.

I have a cousin who is in Mensa, and is a bit of a snob about it. She was always cold to me since I am a lowly blue-collar worker. One time when she was going on about Mensa, I casually mentioned that I was in Intertel, and asked if she was in it as well. She got really quiet and said, 'No, I didn't qualify.' Intertel is the top 1%; Mensa is the top 2%, and I knew that she hadn't qualified for Intertel, or she would have been bragging about that instead. She suddenly decided I was 'worth' of her attention, although I don't know if that's a good thing.

One of the most intelligent people I know would score very poorly on an IQ test, because he can barely read. To talk to him, you would believe him to very intelligent, although not in a bookish way, and he is very successful in business and life in general. Due to dyslexia, however, he barely got out of high school. So by most measures, he is very intelligent, but by the one that 'counts', he's well below average.

Then or now? At 70, I've forgotten so much I think I need to go back to school....

Karen 07/27/13 02:31 PM

I think intelligence is very subjective. It just all depends on what you use or need your intelligence for. If your a rocket scientist you need one type of intelligence, but if your in an area of expertise that deals in common sense, then the greatest brain in the world won't help you.

Darren 07/27/13 02:42 PM

IQ testing is overrated. It's not a marker of success in life or the abilities it can't measure.

jefferson 07/28/13 11:35 AM

It isn't that I think I am so much smarter; it is most are so much dumber.

Hello, neighbor.
Please start a poll on the precentage of people you The universal you) believe are dumber than youself.

I'm developing a theory on why we consider ourselves smarter than others. Possibly because when we make an error in judgement, we know and understand the reasons and therefore come to think the mistake was not so stupid? While with others, we have no idea where this dumb idea came from and so think they are just stupid?

jefferson 07/28/13 12:10 PM

Now remember friend. This is tongue-in-cheek....... I have always believed that it is better to be silent and thought to be stupid; than to jump in and speak, and be known to be stupid. Most who know me do know I tend to run at the mouth enough.

Certainly overrated by people who do not understand what IQ testing is actually meant to reveal! :happy2:

It is overrated because it isn't a measurement of intelligence.

Since intelligence is our general congnitive problem-solving skills, then IQ tests are not accurate. None of the standard IQ tests include things like creativity, learned experiences, personality, motivation, emotions, memory, etc. All of these contribute to a person's intelligence, however, they are not measured in our IQ quotient.

Additionally, IQ tests aren't any indicators of our intelligence. It's only an indicator of our intelligence compared to every other person's; so our IQ is totally a subjective measurement and an unreliable measurement at that.

HollidayS 07/30/13 09:50 PM

IQ tests are only meant to measure your capacity to learn, not your intelligence. As a former Mensa chapter president (5 years), if you really want to know if you are above average, go take their test. It is a much more accurate at measuring than the IQ test.

If you don't care about these things and just want to be smart... Read everything you can get your hands on and experience everything you can. To me that is how to develop intelligence.

Rick 07/30/13 10:31 PM

I'm way two untelligent to jump into this liars den?

Shrek 07/30/13 11:52 PM

A former supervisor of mine knows my intelligence evaluation from when our employer staffed a prototype work environment with above average, average and below average tested employees of the various pay grades of the work force to evaluate who excelled, who assisted those average or below average regardless of their pay grade etc.

Although he has offered to tell me my level identified then I have declined wanting to know as a 180 day experimental work environment twenty five years ago has no bearing on where I am in my life today.

As far as the poll, I had to select below average intelligence based solely on my last marriage. Had I been average or above average intelligence after the second date with my ex I would have :run: instead of cleaning out a drawer in my dresser and part of my closet for her to store her sleep over clothes in. :)

Based solely on this nation's voting record in Nov. 2007

and then again in 2011, it's pretty clear where the

majority of the population fall within that bell-shaped curve.

One would have thought, that the liberal elite would have been

head-and-shoulders above the poor, uneducated working class, in recognizing a con job,

but surprisingly . . . the so-called learning curve remained the same for BOTH groups!

Ohio Rusty 07/31/13 11:41 AM

If my IQ was one point higher ...I'd be a plant !!! (lol)

...............I fully believe that IQ tests , do measure , some facets , of a person's analytical ability . As an example , the Army Airforce used IQ tests during WW2 to filter and choose those wanting to become pilot's . Pilot's need to possess some very explicit skills in mathematics , being able to maintain equilibrium in 3 dimensions when one doesn't have a frame of reference when the horizon is completely obscured by clouds , the ability to formulate a plan on how to maneuver his aircraft into position so he can shoot down the enemy , etc .
................I also would offer up the obvious observation that some who have scored very high on IQ tests are also very talented in multiple areas such as musical composition , mathematics , physics , chemistry , painters , etc . People who possess very high levels of analytical ability also possess very high levels of Imagination..........the creativity to 'SEE' outcomes that lesser mortals simply , DONOT perceive . They have the analytical skills to visualize layers of complexity and how they interact to produce outcomes normal IQ's just don't SEE . Musical Composition is an excellent example of this ability , a composer is listening to many instruments in the orchestra , IN his head , as he composes the score for each singular horn or violin and making sure their sounds don't conflict with each other . Average folks just don't , normally , compose opera's that last for hundreds of years . , fordy:cowboy:

It depend on what skill you need. we all know very smart people that can't find their way out of a wet paper bag and there are some that haven't graduated h.s. or college and have amassed great fortune and or have led an amazing life.

I have my days and some are good and some are just horrid. one day I can be on fire and the next I should have just stayed in bed.

I think persistence and the willingness to learn is better than just being smart. life with out passion is meaningless and full potential is lost.
