Michelle Obama and Bo Obama Surprise Tourists at the White House
Email 62 Smaller Font Text Larger Text | Print

ABC News
First Lady Michelle Obama, with First Dog Bo in tow, surprised tourists in the White House by showing up for an unannounced meet and greet in the Blue Room.

Hundreds of unsuspecting visitors in the tour line got hugs and handshakes – some were brought to tears and others got up out of their wheelchairs to greet Mrs. Obama............

...........
Dozens of students filed past and the First Lady offered her encouragement.

“Good luck we need some good debaters out there,” she told a group of Chicago students in town for a debate competition.

“You gotta be ready to take the mantle,” she told Model United Nations students who were visiting the executive mansion.

“Eat your vegetables. Listen to your teachers. Read, please. And listen to your parents!” she told other youngsters.

She didn’t talk much about politics during the 80 minute-long session but one young man from Tennessee wearing a Ron Paul t-shirt greeted the First Lady and shook her hand. She didn’t comment on the shirt.

Bo got more than his share attention too.

“He’s got a great temper,” she told some of the Model UN students, as they petted the Portuguese Water Dog “And he’s used to it.”

This is was the fourth time in as many years that Mrs. Obama has surprised tourists at the White House.

No one said this is an excuse for President Obama. But it is a fact. The operative word being "started". If Pres O can't be excused neither can Pres Bush.

Does not change the fact that they are rich in their own right. And who says anyone looks up to them or supports him? Facts are facts and the truth is that both the Elephant and the Donkey Presidents took vacations. In fact Pres Bush took 499 days of vacation during his two terms. A record actually. Of course as with all Presidents it was a 'working' vacation.

This whole vacation thing is just plain petty anyway.

Bush Sr., went to Kennebunkport constantly, Bush Jr. went to Crawford contantly, Clinton went somewhere (strip clubs maybe), Reagan went to CA constantly.

While technically, they might not be considered vacations and likely cost less, they certainly did require travel costs, lots of additional security, cooks, maids. etc etc etc. - every time.

It's doubtful that it was their goal, to save taxpayers money - they just liked to hang where they like to hang and relax. They were old fogeys.

Since the Obama's are a much younger family and want to smooze more, so the idea of spending the weekend, with young children at some Camp David type of compound, watching paint dry, is probably not all that appealing.

It is just assumption that they are not spending at least some of their own money.

FWIW I have not had a decent vacation in 8 years, but I don't blame anyone and I don't expect any of my POTUSES, to staying home and watching the box set of all episodes of Hee Haw.

I think he had his entertainment in the oval office.
Wish we could re-elect him. He balanced the budget.

Totally false. Clinton's budget for 1995 showed a $200 billion dollar deficit then and for years to come. It was actually Newt Gingrich who pushed the republicans to balance the budget and Clinton fought them all the way. This is from the CATO institute, a libertarian think tank and hardly friends of Gingrich.

The Obamas are rich - in their own right. They can afford vacations. Both President Bush Sr. and Jr. were also rich in their own right so could also afford vacations. I am not rich but I can afford not-as-glamorous vacations. My sister cannot. My advice to her is to stop shopping for shoes or get a part time job on top of her regualr job for a while in order to save for a vacation. There is no need for me to lead by example. We make our own choices.

I have to admit I don't understand a society that strives for and worships success but is then filled with envy over SOME of those that accomplished what they did not.

The Obama administration is in a recession but the Bush administration was at the height of two wars. So I guess it was noble for Bush to vacation under those circumstances? but ignoble for Obama to vacation during an economic downturn.

I simply don't know what you are saying-"rich in their own right".
It's not about the amount of days spent on vaction-it's about the ammount of $$$$ spent on vacation.I could care less if M went on Vacation for the entire 4 years-and stayed away-on Her dime.

Obama is supposed to be a leader, perhaps it's time he started acting like one?
Anybody can play the blame game, but a real leader doesn't do that.
Obama's not a real leader, he has the entitlement mentality, he's lazy, corrupt and self absorbed.

Clinton had his "entertainment" in many places, except wherever Hillary was.
