True, but it's better to force them to lie than to give them something real. There's a chance they can be caught in the lie.

I don't know that he's expecting you to answer honestly so much as he's watching carefully for your reaction when he asks and you answer those questions.

I must be lucky.

In 36 years of driving, I have never been pulled over, for no reason.

My gf thinks its funny that I do a walk around lamp check of my vehicle at least once a day if I am driving to check running lights, blinkers, headlights, hazard flashers and tag light. I also use a wooden cane I keep in my vehicles to depress the brake pedal if its too light to check my brake lights and I'm by myself. I also inspect and turn on my windshield wipers regardless of the weather as I am leaving.

After dark I also use my cross the street neighbors front window to check my tail/ brake/ back up lights in the rearview mirror before shutting my rig down.

I have seen too many folks pulled over just because of a burned out 75 cent bulb, burned out headlight or a failed wiper so think nothing of the 2 minute walk around safety check.

Plus I have been driving for 36 years and only had one moving violation ticket and that was a no point warning and the only other times I have been stopped were at normal roadblock vehicle /license and DUI checkpoints.

Here's a real life example. I FINALLY got home from jury duty in a criminal case. The guy was brought in for questioning, signed a rights waiver, was interrogated and eventually signed a confession. We convicted him, DUH! But if he had kept his mouth shut and/or had a lawyer with him when he was talking to the police the odds are he'd walked. I for one would have had a difficult time convicting him based solely on the evidence, i.e. w/o the confession.

I'm not a big fan of people getting away with stuff and I'm very glad most criminals are stupid enough to do things like this BUT. . . jiminy crickets when the cops give you a paper saying you don't have to say anything rub two brain cells together and come up with the wise thought of SHUTTING UP!!!!!!!!!!!
