Once while I was face down on the hood of a police car in Connecticut, the officer asked me if I owned any guns. When I told him yes, he asked what kind, and I told him it was a Redhawk .44 magnum. The bright spark then asked if I had it with me, which I thought was a silly question since he had just finished frisking me. Sometimes, you just have to wonder.
As for what to do if you're carrying and get pulled over, I would rather immediately inform the officer that I'm carrying than to have him spot the weapon and think he's in danger. As long as I'm up front about it, there's little chance of a misunderstanding. I'd hate to get him in trouble for mistakenly shooting a citizen.
I got pulled over today for speeding. That as legitimate because I was, in fact, speeding.
The officer asked me if I had "anything in your car that you would be nervous about me finding?" I said "No". He went on with "Guns? Knives? Weapons? Drugs? Weed? etc etc etc?" I just said "No" and joked around with him about my dog (who was in the car) being a weapon of mass destruction.
I just wonder though, why he asked this. He had no kind of reasonable cause to search my car, but the sort of convoluted way he asked that question made me wonder if my answer could have allowed him to do so? Or are criminals really dumb enough to say "Oh yeah! I have 30 pounds of meth in the spare tire!" so he figured it was worth a try?
I actually do sometimes travel with a weapon, but I don't think I would have told him about it anyways.
Depending on your reaction to the question he could have deemed "probable cause" and searched your car. Had he found anything illegal, the courts would then be obliged to rule on the probable cause issue. You might be surprised how many idiots will rat themselves out to the cops sometimes. I have an acquaintance currently serving 3 to 5 years over such stupidity.

You believe they let you off easier if you allow them to search without having to call in the dogs?
Probably not any difference, just a little faster.
Usually at road blocks they already have the dog waiting.
If they don't they will just pull you to the side and you will wait until the dog gets there.

They can't legally make you wait for a dog. If they can get a dog there in the time it takes them to write your ticket, then they can run the dog around. Sure, they can stretch out the ticket writing, but not too long.

Yelp be surprised how a Dog will find a very small roach.
Open Carried for years never a problem. But years ago I would carry Pistol in NYC,never had to use it and was never found.Probably my blessing.

I have seen a man try to leave once.
It wasn't pretty.
The last time DH and I were stopped (license check) My DH told the officer that we were going to be coming back that way and to understand that we were going to be coming from our bee hives and most likely would have bees in the back of the truck. They remembered us and just waved us threw on the return visit. We really should have told them that we had the bees on the first visit LOL

I carry a pistol everywhere I go. I don't say a thing about it if I am stopped.
Had my car searched several times but they only run the serial number and give it back to me.
In this state we don't need permits to carry a gun in the car.
If your were in ohio you would be arrested for failure to Identify.. CCW laws require you to notify if stopped anytime your carrying a gun.
I wouldn't put much faith in a LEO. Chance are good, he is more nutty than you can imagine.
This police offer was a real PIA.. Lots of local press on this. He had several cases of this type of abuse and was suppose to be kicked off the force. The guy in the car was arrested for fail to inform (required in ohio), but those charges were dropped. he ended up with a "stopping" violation.

Want to bet they can... You try to leave your now fleeing an officer and are arrested, Now they have the cause needed to search..
This thread reminds me of a guy at my Patriots meeting the other night. (I think he was drunk!) We had two LEOs there answering questions about concealed carry and other gun laws in the state. "Joe" kept raising his hand... and finally got called on. He WENT OFF on the cops, yelling about "what a scam having to have a permit is", and "the 2nd A says we're ALL allowed to carry and it's nobodies business if we're carrying or not", yada, yada. Everyone sat there dumbfounded, letting him rant... even the cops. I was sitting right behind him, so I finally said, "Joe, they enforce the laws... they don't write them". He yelled "I KNOW that, but THEY PROMOTE IT!" Dang... liveliest meeting I've been to in awhile!
I mean, I'm sure all members there agree, but he definitely had the wrong target in his sights! As a general rule, our local LEOs are very lenient about gun laws, unless you really mess up!

I wouldn't mind having my truck searched, providing they did a thorough job and allowed me to watch. I've misplaced a few things in the mess that's in the cab, and I'm too lazy to look for them myself. I'd be glad to let an officer help!

Every state has different laws they go by. Every jurisdiction has rules they go by. I was stopped at a road block in MO just outside of Springfield. I told them that I had a license to carry and they treat me like I just robbed the bank and had me lie in the middle of a road just to get at my weapon. In a few minuets the supervisor showed up and call them rookie and gave my weapon back and tole me to have a nice day. Some times it takes a supervisor to make them understand that you are not breaking the law. I never argue with a police I will argue with a judge or a supervisor (Sergent or above).

If the officer has no RS to detain me, no search with a dog will be admissible.

UPDATE 7/22/2011: Canton Police announced Thursday 7/21 that the officer was relieved of all duties in June following an internal investigation complaint filed in this matter. The local Canton Repository has done some additional investigatory work into the officers and an excellent analysis of the video / audio we posted. The video and story has gone both viral and national crossing over to websites not typically affiliated with the pro-gun movement. Shortly after 7:00pm Thursday our website could no longer handle the volume of visitors we were receiving. We promptly quadrupled the resources behind OhioCCW.org in light of the popularity of this story.
I believe that the exchange would be more appropriate as:
you: Officer, am I being detained.
Officer : No.
you: if I am not being detained I will be leaving now.
officer : but you can't leave.
You: But you just said I am not being detained. Thank you and have a nice night.
Yup, I've done that exact thing twice. The dog threat is a common tactic of police. The only way it works is if people don't know their rights and they sit there voluntarily waiting for the dog, instead of asking if they are free to go.
