I had the same question a couple years ago. I emailed all the companies selling canned salmon (the brands commonly available in grocery stores). Bumblebee was the ONLY brand that gave me a straight answer. Here is what they said:

Thank you for taking the time to contact us about our Bumble Bee Salmon.

Our Alaskan Salmon is caught, cleaned, and canned in the US. We do not ship it anywhere else. We hope this answers your question.

Thank you,
Bumble Bee Consumer Affairs

So that is the only brand I buy.

Animal (pet and livestock) feed with corn
No store bought meat or dairy, and I'm pretty picky about fruits and veggies. Mostly eat our own homegrown, canned or fresh, and farmers markets in season.
No soda or packaged juice
Don't eat much packaged food, never have.
No food from China
Buy staples in bulk to avoid packaging
That all said, we're enjoying our big old hickory farms cheese and sausage box received as a gift for Xmas!
Lucky to live in a place where farm raised meat is readily available, can hunt and fish, and can buy fish right off the boat at the Astoria docks or in the Dalles during the native fishing season, take it home and freeze or can it. Lucky to have enough land to raise most of our own food. Don't judge those not as fortunate, gotta do what you gotta do.

I try to buy as little as possible... except for books. I buy lots of books.

I try not to buy anything plastic, unless there's a particular reason why plastic is better or a logical choice.

I absolutely refuse to buy any butter substitute; I absolutely refuse to buy anything with an artificial sweetener; I don't buy anything that's fat-free of which fat is a vital component. Generally speaking I don't buy any vegetable oil other than olive oil: for cooking, that's what God made butter and lard (and olive oil) for (I do occasionally indulge in sesame oil or peanut oil).

I won't buy any car not manufactured by an American company. (I don't buy many cars, and in practice, I don't buy any car that isn't a Ford).

Generally speaking, I don't buy anything that's disposable when there's a non-disposable alternative. When I do, I try to find ways to make the disposable not-disposable, or to repurpose the item in whole or in part.

Generally speaking, I avoid buying anything not made in the US. Quite frequently, there is no US made option, and sometimes, the US-made option is inferior to the non-Made choice. I decide on these matters on a case-by-case basis.

I don't buy anything from McDonalds, except occasionally, the sweet tea. I broke this rule only once in the past 20 years and got sick as a result.

I don't buy meat from the local grocery. We got horribly sick once. Never again.

No foods with MSG. Trying to avoid made in China foods.

Personally, I don't know whether Canola contains 'toxins' or if it's the same rape seed or not, nor do I care. I don't like it, I don't believe it's healthy for humans, so I don't use it or buy it.

Same with soy, with the exception of soy sauce. I don't think soy beans are people food, do I don't grow them, buy them, or eat them. Obviously, a lot of people disagree with me, and that's certainly their right. My choice means more for them.

Same thing with corn. Unless it's supposed to made out of corn - like corn meal, grits, tortillas, corn bread, or... well, you know... corn, I don't want it if it's got corn by products in it. I don't even want corn starch in my gravy - that's what roux is for. The corn industry keeps a lot of scientists on the extended payroll to convince us all that corn (among other things) is really healthy for us, but I respectfully disagree. A lot of you corn champions don't have any problems disagreeing with science when it comes to evolution or global warming - you pick your fights, and I'll pick mine.

The hard thing about not buying MSG's is that now they label "natural flavoring" which is a pretty way to say MSG and not freak anyone out.
Kinda like calling HFCS 'corn sugar'. Same junk, prettier name!!

Curious question:

For all ya'all that are SUPER choosy about their foods (as you should be), do you every go out to eat? And if you do, are you SUPER choosy about the restaurant that you select?

Please read this...

From Sally Fallon and Mary G Enig PhD

This is from the Weston Price Foundation web site.

Read ALL of it.

http://www.westonprice.org/know-your...t-con-ola.html

Stay away from canola, corn oil, soy. They are not good for you.

By the way the best oil is Coconut oil.

Oh yeah. I forgot that one. After working in a service deli I have never looked at restaurant food in the same way again. The words "appetizing" and "restaurant" do not even go together in my mind. :-/

I get the non-GMO corn starch. It's great for homemade pudding!

out of corn, of course, but only rarely do I encounter anything that actually requires or warrants the use of corn starch.

I also will not buy anything Kraft because they are owned by Phillip Morris. They use the same add techniques to sell their products to children, IMO adding/causing problems with obesity in kids, that they used to get them to smoke. Also no Walmart anything.

"The hardware and the grocery have gone away
But they got low prices everyday
Three jobs go they bring in two
What's a working fella supposed to do

Walmart Killed the Country Store

The factory closed they could'nt compete
With slave labor sweatshops across the sea
Put your little town on the map
With four football fields of Chinese crap

Walmart Killed the Country Store

They doscriminate by race and age
Won't pay nobody a living wage
Walmart's here let's all rejoice
Everone else is gone and we ain't got a choice

Walmart killed the country store"

Altria, The parent company of Phillip Morris has had no holdings in Kraft since March of 2007. They are separate companies.
