It was a surprise to me what all was on the test. I do agree, a naturalized citizen would usually know more about our govt. than someone born here.

Who's talking about slum lords? Not all landlords are bad, many of them are very good.

That doesn't say much for our education system in this country does it.

I graduated in 69,,, and our educational system was a serious topic in our civics class at that time. We held several discussions about where a lot of what was then new practices would take us. Most of my classmates felt pretty much the same way as I did/do.... we recognized the need to maintain an emphasis on the basics. There were those who didnt see it that way back then too. Sadly that minority wound up winning out, and our public education system has pretty much gone to pot ever since. There seems to be more emphasis on teaching kids what to think rather than on what they need to know or how to think.

I graduated a year before you. My first 8 years of schooling was in a tiny school. There was 4 kids in my 8th grade class. The entire school never had over 40 kids and that was first through eighth grade. Two teachers for the entire school. 75% of the graduates went on to college.

Hmm. My rights are stripped if I do something illegal, but if you start out illegal they give your rights to vote.

Don't sound right does it?
Seems like I heard there is a way to get voting rights returned to those who have had legal problems.

That is for sure.
You lose many "rights" if you do something illegal and are arrested. Always has been always will be.
But start out illegally and bingo some want all the same rights as a legal person in this country. No Way should they be able to do that.

Actually the social studies teachers in our school set that exam to the students each year, and they do very well at it. I was referring to their elders.

It kinda makes one wonder why so many of our citizens seem to think we live in a democracy doesnt it?

And actually, if you are a permanent resident within the qualifying age, you are required to register for the draft. So scurrying home won't be so easy.
