Not really, it depends on your situation and your needs. I drive a 17 year old pickup but my wife just bought a new car. We saved up enough to pay for it by not owing anything on our previous car. Her new car was 20K and will cost around 2K per year since she will have it about 10 years. That is an acceptable level of cost to her for the peace of mind of a reliable vehicle. My peace of mind level on my truck is knowing that if it dies on the road, I will walk over and sit in the shade till someone comes along and gives me a ride.
