I know who she was, but had never heard any of her music until just a few minutes ago on You Tube. While her voice was (IMO) somewhat "generic" as far as female singers sound nowadays, her choice of material was not...I liked what I heard.
So sad that she wouldn't take advantage of the help that was available to her...for whatever reason, I guess she wasn't ready to make the change.
She wrote her own songs too which seems rarer and rarer in performers any more.

I saw something nasty in the woodshed
I don't think I've ever listened to her music, but her makeup always annoyed me, especially since I worked for awhile with a young woman who insisted upon emulating her exaggerated style. Bleah!
It's always sad to see someone throw their life away. There was no lack of help available to Winehouse had she reached out for it. Not every addict has access to such resources. It's a shame she chose not to make use of them.

She did try. About a year or 2 ago, she was looking very healthy and had put some weight on. She would get clean and then relapse. She last got out of rehab a couple of months ago (if I remember correctly).
For those that don't know who Amy Winehouse was, she was part of what became known as the female UK Soul revival - Amy Winehouse, Joss Stone, Duffy, and Adele. Her album, Back to Black, won 5 Grammies - Best Pop Vocal Album, "Rehab" won Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Song of the Year and Record of the Year, and she won Best New Artist. The album was also nominated for Album of the Year. wikipedia
I wonder if Lucinda Williams was thinking of Winehouse when she wrote "Little Rock Star"?
Quote:
Hey Little Rock Star, why don't you see
This is not all that it's cracked up to be
And I can't say I blame you
For throwing the towel in or buying more fame
by cashing your chips in
But with all of your talent, and so much to gain
To toss it away like that would be such a shame

Really, I was surprised she lasted this long. The differences in her appearance in 2008 and last year made me wonder if she was living on meth.

death is always sad and tragic. my sympathies to her family and friends who also had to battle her addiction.
i don't 'talk' on here, but i'm here everyday....i read and i feel like i know you all. i have a warped sense of humor, so please... no one take offense for bringing up mama cass and the urban myth. " if mama cass had just shared that [ham] sandwich with karen carpenter, they'd both be alive today". bad, i know.

Nothing wrong with a (slightly) twisted sense of humor!
