Reckless driving and drunk driving are bad crimes. And as Bluemoon already pointed out - traffic stops yield up a lot of warrant arrests, so traffic stops are fighting crime.

One more thing about cops that bother me. If they stop a person and find out they have a large sum of money on their person they take it. If the person cannot come up with an explanation that will satisfy them, they will keep it.

Not much difference in them and the crooks.

Somehow, I don't consider seat belt violations to be bad crimes.

New Jersey comes to mind, not that it is any way limited to that particular state. Check out the Comprehensive Forfiture Act of 1984. You are presumed guilty until proven innocent.

It is very common in Ms. If you have over $1000 in cash they will take it and it will be up to you to give them a good enough reason to give it back.
About 6 months ago it happened to a friend of mine. I had just bought a car from him and he was on his way home. He was stopped at a road block and they noticed the money when he was getting his drivers license out.
The cops took it and it was over a week later until we could satisfy them that it was legally his.

I have heard that this happens in Texas often. Mexican/Americans (who dont use banks as much) and Blacks get pulled over at higher rates than other's. If they have money 2-10K or more, it is confiscated. Does not matter what it was intended for - could be for drugs - could be for a pickup truck. If they want the money back, they have to pay for a lawyer and be prepared to go the distance. The local courts are in on it too. It's legal. Most usually give up, getting the money back..

One Sheriffs Dept. payed for the Administrative Assistants annual bonuses and some medical bills, out of this money. They love it.

Some of DB friends (white young guys) went through a similar shakedown, years ago in Lampasses.
