I might actually give some of the current "stars" a listen, if they stood up on a bare stage, and sang a tune.... a capella, baby! From what I gather, the current sensations are not even known for their singing, which is laughable, but their personas.

P.T. Barnum was a freaking Genius. Maybe he's still alive! Or at least one of his trainees.... for so many silly people to fall for such substandard talent.

Personally I have no problem with remakes, or folks singing other folks tunes... Don't know if Ella Fitzgerald wrote any of her works... and if you could only sing your own, quite a few talented divas would have been stranded on barren shores...
That is one reason I never liked concerts. Not many people can really sing.
In a studio they sound good, alone on stage they sound like my neighbor.

Mark me already a curmudgeon. We don't have TV. We finally dropped satellite when we realized we were paying almost $100 a month and were watching 3 reruns of Law and Order each night.

My oldest son was a teen in the 70's and I do remember hearing his music - some of it was enjoyable - even for me. The new music just grates on my teeth. We don't watch many new movies, but what really ruins the movie for me is the modern stuff they call singing. It is really nothing more than speaking of words with no tune, no change in voice, just one long level breathy chant.

This is the reason why I absolutely detest western culture and hate playing gigs in bars - it's the continual regurgitation of an insipid culture for drunks.

It's also the reason why I've been listening to a lot of vintage folk music from the Baltics - such old music seems to represent honesty to me. And listening to the energy of youthful musicians who take inspiration from such old music - my favourites seem these days to be ilgi, Laimas Muzykanti, Balki, Laima Jansone, Biruta Ozolina - feels absolutely refreshing and unchained to the pathetic regime of "rock and roll".

There's plenty of good new music and movies, you just have to look for it now unlike it used to be. You have to understand years back it was art first and a business second, now it's all business. Remakes are instant money and that's good for business. Taking a chance on new artists is too much of a gamble for corporate America. Instead if it is someone new they picked they shove it down your throats and tell you that you like it.
