"India graduates more college grads than we have students."

India is somewhat of a special situation. They have a far higher population than jobs available. From what I have read, it isn't unusual to have students with multiple degrees. I suspect even a call center job requires a college degree there.

I have yet to see any evidence Project Head Start has produced any noticeable results. I recall reading by the third grade there is virtually no difference in students who receive pre-school and those who don't.

We homeschool, so I have no answers for the broader problem. However, there is a school in ths county that the kids call the 'prison school'. It is where these types of kids attend. Windows are even covered with metal shutters. I suppose some 'kids' need this sort of discipline.

I agree, 911 should have been called, the agressors either expelled or incarcerated. All the namby pamby, touchy feely business isn't doing anything but teaching thugs that they can be thugs and get away with it.

Liberalism has destroyed our school system. They will blame poverty or some other clap trap but the bottom line is a result of liberal policies of social engineering. Lets place the blame where it belongs.

Wonder what happened to the perpetrators?
Men
What is needed are Men.
Men of honor, integrity, men who are not afraid to drop the boom on a kids head...in love....for the purpose of teaching, training, correcting, rebuking.
Men who mentor, as well as teach.
Men who are invested in the community, the children, their future.

But, IMHO inner city schools are designed for failure.
(I have my own 'conspiracy theory' why inner city schools fail miserably)

What do we need to do to make inner city schools safer?

More parental control or in the absence of that reform schools and prison.

Put God and Prayer and Punishment back in the schools and you would be amazed at how good things would get.
Schools in TN still beat kids with paddles and it hasn't solved their discipline problems or even lessened them. In fact, their problems grow every day. Praying at school would have no meaning unless there is some connection made at home.

I think many kids don't understand education. It is something totally separate from their lives. Why do they need to learn to read? What does this math stuff has to do with me? They don't have a means to apply it to their lives so it's rather meaningless. They don't understand what school is supposed to be doing for them....therefore, all

Discipline problems in schools have always been and will always be a parenting problem. Rare is the child that behaves at home and acts out often at school. Rare is the child that acts out continuously at school supported at home. There are a few, but they are not the normal discipline problem. I think we get way off base when we blame the schools for the kids' behaviors. I think the schools do everything they can do to help these kids for the most part. But what they can do is so limited without parental support. Many parents do not help their own children. Is it the kids with parent(s) at home that have family activities, read together, eat meals together, teach their kids responsible behaviors, etc, that are the problem in the schools? Usually not.

There is not fix to inner city school troubles without a LOT of PAIN. And Americans don't seem to want to do the hard thing. Perhaps there was a time when just not allowing them in school was the fix. But that would be a lot of kids on the streets causing trouble -perhaps we would eventually educate them in jail? Until we end welfare or greatly reduce it, some folks are just not going to have a reason to make sure their kids are educated. We've given our people a way out of working for their futures and unfortunately, many are weak enough to take it. We have people that PLAN on living on welfare. And unfortunately, once on that wagon, it's very hard to get off. We have done this to these people. It becomes a vicious cycle. They live in the inner cities. They can't get out - so their kids are raised in that environment with it's attitudes and traditions.

There is more reason to be educated than just to get a job. Education opens up understanding - understanding of people and the world around us. No matter what your job - we can all use as much of that understanding as possible.

This one is easy, arm the teachers with better weapons than the students bring. AK47s come to mind.

I am thinking that some of those costs could be cut as well, making it both cheaper and safer for the rest of us.

To many there is no benefit to getting an education. They do not ever plan to work for a living anyway. As long as they can make a living off the government, drugs, and crime they won't need any schooling.
If the people ever decide to quit rewarding these types of actions we might see a difference. Not likely to happen.
