I would be concerned about them rotting around here. Rains every day for months in the winter!

hmmmm.... think this might be one of those things that work better in some places than others? IDK tho- SO not an expert!

I have an entire 5'x5' compost box full of winter squash and tomato seedlings that are any where from 4" to 6" or more. I'd say there are probably 100 tomato and half again as many squash crammed in there. They are all from organic open pollinated/heirlooms as that's the only things I put in there, but I haven't a clue as to what's what. I for sure know that I threw in some rotting Cherokee Purple, Striped Romans and Stupice tomatoes last fall...and over the winter the remains of Delicata squash, Butternut squash, Connecticut Field pumpkin, and New England Sugar Pie pumpkin made it into the heap as well. I don't want to kill them, but I don't have a clue as to where I'd put them all...
