Ann, I sure hope Dixie improves. I know you and her must be exhausted. Blessings on you both.

Oh my gosh, what a wonderful bedtime surprise! Just checked in to discover the old trailer-em-around thing might actually have worked!

IT WORKED ON MY MARE! we were at the Hanoverian Inspection and my mare coliced on-site with her foal by her side. The inspection site veterinarian did a rectal and said "she's twisted! get her on the trailer to the clinic right now, I will sedate the foal and keep her here!"

One hour later, I pulled into the clinic, they did the work up, and declared that the trailer ride had un-twisted her! I do so hope that this is what you have miraculolusly had happen!

One thing: IV fluids and another tubing may be necessary; her guts are inflamed and raw and need some lubrication and plumping up with fluids. 5000ml of Lactated Ringers Solution hung from a rafter above her stall and a catheter in her neck is not too horribly expensive if you can swing it!

I was up about every 3 hours checking on her last night. She is walking around, not much but walking. She really wants out of the round pen and back in the field with her buddies and I would so love to be able to do that. He flanks are still soft. I forgot my stethescope so will wait til it is light to see how much her bowel sounds have improved. She is drinking some - but more playing in the water - splashing it around. She did this yesterday and I thought she was trying to get the residual KY out of her nose from the tube but now am not sure. Am going to call the vet when they open and see about taking her in IF I can get her in the trailer by myself. It took 2 yesterday and my hubby has to go back to work today - although his boss is keeping him in town in case I need him. (He drives truck). I can give another dose of banamine in about 2.5 hours but the vet said to try not too do it that close if I did not have to because of the risk of ulcers. Every 24 hours is preferred to every 12 is what I was told. She is not acting like she hurts - she has not laid down overnight that I can tell (no mud on her sides), she is not looking at flanks, she is not standing like she is stretching or needs to pee. I hope we will soon be out of the woods.

And Jill - IV fluids are not a problem. If they can tell me how they get a catheter to stay in the horses neck I can start it and administer. I had been giving her the sedating agent IV. Can't be any harder to start the IV but keeping it in - I am used to using tape on people - don't think that would stick to horse hair LOL.

I actually got about 5 hours sleep last night Hurray.

Crossing my fingers for you!
Our old mare colicked a few years ago, when she was 32. The fill-in vet (ours was waaay out in the country on an emergency call) said she was twisted and wanted to euthanize her. She was pretty heavily sedated then. We said we wanted to wait on HER vet to come do it, so our vet ordered her to be kept sedated until he arrived. Thank God we decided to wait, because he said she wasn't twisted and tubed her again. We kept her sedated and on pain meds for the entire day and night. By morning, we had poop!

I hope you have the same positive result.

Well when I went to put her in the trailer, she was hurting more and the benamine had had an hour to work. I tried walking her in the front yard to see if I could calm her down/distract her but it was not working. I was taking her to put her back in the round pen so I could go inside to get the sedation. I planned on sedating the heck out of her and was going to have to shoot her. She was just hurting so bad something awful must have happened in a very short time. We were 1/2 way to the round pen when she just through herself to the ground and died before I could do anything.

My husband is on his way home. He will be here in about an hour. Our neighbor is seeing if his back hoe will start - may need to be jumped with the tractor. My friend, who owns the land we are living on, said it is OK to bury her but Merl will have to take her to the back acreage.

I am glad that she is not hurting anymore but wish I had had the sedation closer, although the way she was tossing her head I am not sure I could have gotten it in her.

Thank you for all your support.

Oh no! I'm so sorry. It's rough, but her time was come and you can't stop that when it happens. Just rest and don't second guess yourself.

I'm so sorry to hear that. She fought the good fight, and was very brave.

Keep your good memories in the forefront in the days to come, and try to forget her last days.
