I like feeding well soaked beet pulp or a slurry of pelleted feed (fave is the pulp) after a colic like that, they have no choice but to consume the water that way. Glad he's doing better.

Sorry Minelson, you can give it orally with a syringe or put it on feed. I wouldn't use it in cases of severe colic but it sure seems to help mild cases and it isn't even one of those old rancher tricks, this comes straight from our ag college horse department.

Good thing to know, wr! I didn't know about that, but I always have vanilla in the cupboard.

Molasses in water makes it more tempting to horses, too.

The college always indicated you should use the real stuff but like I said, I've used the artificial in a pinch with good results. I would not encourage it used in more severe cases nor should it replace vet instructions but if you don't have what you need in the cupboard, it's sure better than feeling helpless.

I doubt if we still have the thread but a while back App had popped in for a bit and she commented that she had a young horse colic and she remembered the vanilla trick and it worked well for her as well.

RideBarefoot, I have to take the test pilot home before he eliminates every scrap of food in my house but when I get back, I'll pm you a handy little recipe that's great for deep cuts and eliminates proud flesh but if the trauma happens to leave me traumatized and I happen to forget, just give me a reminder.

Quantity of poop is related to his intake of solids, not necessarily his intake of water. Consistency is related to water - if they are small, hard and dry, then yes, try to get more fluids in him, and the soaked beet pulp or pellet slurry suggestion is a great way to do so. If you have quit feeding him or are feeding him much less than you normally do, then it makes sense he would be moving less through his bowels. Have you started back on feeding him hay yet?

My goofy one colicked in such a fashion last winter...laying, rolling, kicking his stomach, I thought it was all over but the vet visit...then, suddenly, *poof* he was all better.

That is good to know about the vanilla, never heard of that. I will be sure to keep it in my emergency kit!

Hoping all is well now.

The Joey report is good! He is eating-drinking-pooping-peeing all normal

I just came in from playing with them with the hose...Joey doesn't like it too much but Spencer LOVES it and they get all wet and run, buck, roll and fart. So all is good on the Nelson Homestead. Thanks everyone!
