French Toast

I think I know why somebody invented French Toast! It's to get rid of the end peices of loave of bread!

I was getting a collection of end peices and couple of extra hot dog buns. They would either go to waste or become chicken feed. But I had a better ideal, make French Toast.

Alice Kramden 07/17/13 08:58 AM

Drat it! Now I want French toast for breakfast. Never mind that I've already had breakfast, now I want French toast. With honey instead of syrup. I've got eggs (fresh from a friend's chickens), got honey, but got no bread. Hmmmm. Drat it.

When I try to bake a new bread and fail miserably, it always becomes French toast.

RJMAcres 07/17/13 10:50 AM

You really need to try french toast made from sourdough bread.

jwal10 07/17/13 11:11 AM

We have French toast for dinner many evenings. I like French toast made from sourdough bread too. AN egg, same amount of milk and a little vanilla and a shake of cinnamon, dip it and cook in a fry pan with a teaspoon of bacon grease. I will put a mixture of cut up fruit in a sauce pan to cook down while putting the French toast together and ladle it on top....James

jwal10 07/17/13 11:16 AM

The bread heels never go to waste here, many times I cut one off as soon as the loaf cools enough to cut. They are the best part, toasted with a little sweet cream butter, sometimes a little peach, apple, blackberry or strawberry jelly....James

Ardie/WI 07/17/13 11:57 AM

I make french toast with my homemade egg bread. What I do is cut the slices a wee bit thicker and put them on a square baking pan. Then I wisk up the eggs, milk and a generous shake or two of cinnamon. I pour it over the bread and turn the bread over so they're fully coated. Then, I cover the pan and put it in the refrigerator until the next day. The bread absorbs the mixture and when it's fried up, the middle is almost custard like while the outside is crispy.
Butter and warm syrup make it perfect!

Plendlful 07/17/13 01:02 PM

Sourdough french toast is definitely the best! Any odds and ends of bread we have go in a bag in the freezer for stuffing or breadcrumbs when I get to them.

BigHenTinyBrain 07/17/13 01:33 PM

Around here french toast is mostly about using up a lot of eggs!

Can't try it. Don't have your homemade egg bread recipe.
Hint.
Hint.

;)

empofuniv 07/18/13 10:55 PM

Around here the ends and extra pcs of bread are saved up and used for apple brown betty. Or apple/pear brown betty, which used to be our favorite until I made some blackberry brown betty. I use all kinda of bread. Sourdough, italian, ciabotta, 3 grain, etc. It all gets used.

Blackberry brown betty.

Am I the only one who doesn't put anything on mine other than butter? I sugar the batter, which adds the sweetness, and munch down once it's done cooking.

Ravenlost 07/19/13 01:14 AM

Are we the only ones who eat french toast with butter and powdered sugar? The only syrup used it the dollop I put in my egg batter.

And we like it best made with stale raisin bread.

I do this same recipe but use thick Italian bread slices. it absorbs the eggie goodness, and fries up ultra delish. I add a dash of nutmeg to mine, too. coat it all with syrup, butter, fried honey bananas, and don't dare go on the scale. :)

I do many times in the winter but when there is fresh fruit, I can't control my urges. I am working harder in the summer....this winter.... I will probably have to watch those calories since I am retired :spinsmiley:....James

My mother always added a ton of sugar to her egg batter for French Toast, which as a kid was just too sweet for me. My Dad as a joke told me to put mustard on it, which I did and loved it. Everyone thinks I am weird now. (it doesn't work unless you put a ton of sugar in the eggs.)

Alice Kramden 07/19/13 04:42 PM

Thanks, Ravenlost! Use raisin bread, oh wow. That gives me ideas.

Ardie, your recipe sounds like the French toast I had in Chicago one time, years and years ago. It was the best I'd ever eaten. Don't remember the restaurant, I just went out of the hotel to get breakfast somewhere.

Side note: Some of the best steaks I'd ever had, too, while I was there.

PATRICE IN IL 07/19/13 05:00 PM

I add a couple of tablespoons of flour to my eggs and whisk until completely blended then I add milk, vanilla and a bit of cinnamon and whisk to combine. You get a nicely battered french toast like at IHOP restaurant. I also like to use cinnamon raisin or cinnamon swirl bread or banana bread for French toast. Yummy!!! I know what I'm having tomorrow morning for breakfast ;)

Jolly 07/19/13 07:50 PM

Pain Perdu...it literally means "lost bread" in French...it's a nice way to use that stale bread in the cupboard before it hits the hog's scrap bucket...

Big Dave 07/19/13 08:49 PM

Went to town. Could not find a Frenchman to make me toast???

DH eats French toast and waffles that way. I'd never seen it made that way before. I must admit it tastes with butter and powdered sugar but it tastes even better when you add syrup. Yep, it takes you to sugar city.

Anybody ever use poor man's syrup? When we ran out or didn't have the money, Mom boiled brown sugar and water until it was very slightly thickened.

I think grilled jam sandwiches are the best use of bread heels. You make them just as you would make cheese sandwiches. The heels are flaky and pastry like.

ronbre 07/20/13 07:12 PM

i'd love the recipe for the brown betty please.

another thing you can make is bread pudding..I've been thinking of using leftover frozen donuts in a bread pudding, just been too hot to bake

I also use butter and powdered sugar instead of maple syrup, and I crisp up the french toast in either a good fat or oil or in butter..any kinda bread

chickenmommy 07/21/13 06:26 PM

I make brioche to make french toast with. Yum. I slice it up thick and package in packs of 2 slices each and freeze. Handy and tasty.

calliemoonbeam 07/21/13 11:57 PM

Guess I'm the only weird one, lol. I don't like French toast...or bread pudding. I know, practically un-American! I've tried a bunch of different recipes that sound good, as do some of yours, but I just don't like it, think it's more about the texture than the flavor. I save my stale bread or heels for dressing (or stuffing if you're a northerner), bread crumbs and croutons.

On a side note, I also hate cheesecake...you should see the looks I get when I tell people that! :D I don't like hardly anything with cream cheese in it, it just gags me. Okay, now that I've horrified everyone, I'll toddle off, lol.... Sorry for the thread drift!

d'vash 07/22/13 12:11 AM

But, but the ends of the bread loaves are the best part! I guess saving them for French toast is a good compromise, though.

I....I.....I....I thought I knew you!

;)

Not gonna be trying my recipe for strawberry chocolate chip cream cheese stuffed french toast anytime soon, are you?

calliemoonbeam 07/22/13 11:36 AM

ROFL! You just never know what's lurking deep inside, do you?? :D

The ingredients sound really yummy (other than the cream cheese), but I know from experience I probably wouldn't eat it. Don't know exactly what it is about the texture that gets me, but even when I eat waffles they have to be crispy, not soft and spongy. It's the same texture thing. Sorry to disappoint you, lol! :)

It's okay! You should see the looks I get when I say that I don't like bacon!

Oh the horror! lol I could eat my weight in bacon! Tell you what, I'll take all your shares of bacon, and you can have all my shares of french toast and cheesecake. :)

Joshie 07/22/13 12:23 PM

Ardie, would you please share your egg bread recipe?

Ardie/WI 07/22/13 01:01 PM

EGG BREAD 1 1/2 # loaf

Following your bread machine instructions order of ingredients:

2 eggs & enough water to equal 1C plus 1 Tbsp (at room temp or about 80 degrees.

1 1/2 Tbsp. butter or oil (cut the butter into itsy-bitsy pieces.)

2 Tbsp. sugar

1 1/2 Teaspoons salt

3 Tbsp. dry milk

3 C. bread flour

2 Tsp. yeast

I use the dough cycle, knead it, let it rise and bake it in the oven at 350 about 21 minutes.

tonasket 07/22/13 02:33 PM

I don't use cinnamon or sugar on my french toast, I season it with salt and pepper. Yummy, then just a hint of syrup when it is done, yummy.

mamita 07/22/13 03:41 PM

a new favorite...this I used just white bread. dip in egg/milk mixture (I put a dash of sugar and vanilla in that. don't freak out mnn. lol) place one piece in skillet, top with some squares of Hershey chocolate, top with another dipped piece. lower temp to be sure it all cooks thru, but when it's crispy goodness with melty chocolate inside....worth the wait. (we don't eat it, but your grandkids will think you rule the planet if you make this) :) yes...drenched in syrup also. so...what happens at grandma's stays at grandmas. cause my DD would never approve. lol

tallpines 07/22/13 04:21 PM

Stayed at a B & B once where they offered "Suffed French Toast" as one of the breakfast options.

Home baked bread sliced extra thick and then sliced through the middle part way to add the filling.

The filling was a mix of cream cheese and marshmallow creme.

Extremely Delish!

chickenmommy 07/22/13 10:26 PM

Now I want stuffed french toast.

LisaT 07/23/13 07:35 AM

Funny, I was going to mention that our new specialty around here is stuffed French toast!

Easy to do: Mix a block of cream cheese with a little powdered sugar & a dash of vanilla till its nice and creamy.

Get out your favorite homemade jam--I am using up strawberry-rhubarb jam from the freezer.

Get 2 slices of bread, slather on the cream cheese filling (thickly) on one slice, put a large dollop of jam in the middle of that cream cheese and then cover with the other slice of bread. Press around the edges to 'seal'.

Dip into egg batter as you would normally do with French toast. Fry on both sides, eat with syrup, powdered sugar or what have you.

Yum-O!
