Many times people will turn down cash but will take physical things.

One man gave me some well worn bib overalls and shirts. He knew I was going to be working to clean things up and search for what i could so he gave me work clothes.

I have mentioned this before as this type of question arises, the school I worked at gave us a "shower". We registered like newlyweds would at various stores and people bought things as they could afford, some going in togethers and so forth. We called it a Phoenix shower as it was out of the ashes.

Definitely a gift card. A good friend's house burned to the ground a year and a half ago and she told me the most welcome gifts were gift cards so she could replace clothing and toiletries right away. She said the cards ranged from $10.00 up to $100.00 and every one was welcome. Second would be already prepared meals ready to pop in the microwave. As others have mentioned, even though your friend is staying with family, easing the burden of food prep. for all of them would be most welcome.

I would still give them cash - in a card without your name. Just write "We're thinking of you and know you wouldn't take it if we offered this to you so now you don't know who we are and you MUST take it." Leave it in their front door.

Cash is king, IMO.

After that, I'd get them gift cards to Walmart or someplace that they can pick up some clothes quickly. Offer to even drive them.

I like the idea of the meals since now the daughter needs to feed more people.
