I can identify with you. Over the past year we learned that my step-siblings stripped my father of $700K in real estate, leaving him to work for the rest of his life. He died at home suddenly at the age of 79 while getting ready to go to work.

Restitution doesn't look good. The property transfers happened a long time ago. We've got statute of limitations problems, so it's looking like they'll get away with it.

My sister and I spent the say yesterday dealing new bank accounts and making a plan for my mother's living and expenses. I had to go talk with two family friends that she borrowed from the get more money to "invest" in this scheme. fortunately both people plan to be supportive.

My mother now has NO cash, it is all gone. For some reason she truly believed the story these scammers had for her. They were slick and is sickens me that this happened.

We know God is good and at least we have non-cash assets so we have options for my mother. Unfortunately it won't be an easy path from now on.

Thank you for all the prayers and comments of support.

Jim

Had a dear elderly friend that had this same thing happened. I found out about it when she told me on the phone a man was coming to pick her up to go to the bank with her $12 million check. The family was clueless, this had been going on for a couple years and I'm not sure how much she ended up sending to them. Had large phone bills to the Bahamas too.

Family took over the money, sold her beautiful home and moved her in about three hours to a "retirement home". She was pretty angry about it all but has since found her nitch there and is relatively happy. Funny thing, the thing that bothers her the most now is that she doesn't have her car.

This woman was so organized and smart and frugel I never would have believed this would happen to her. These scammers are very good at manipulation, I was there one day when she got a call and the man screamed at her over the phone, told her she would loose the money if she told anyone, etc. As people age they become more and more childlike.

I'm glad you caught it now, they would have kept going until mom's assets were gone, they had my friend convinced to sell her home and send the money. Untouchable since they are out of the US.

My sister and I learned last night that my elderly mother is the victim of an elaborate Elder Fraud Scheme. Over the last four months she has wired almost $250,000 to a bank in Costa Rica for three lawyers that were "working hard to get your money" from a bank there. In that time she went from a retired professional living a good, secure retirmement to one with $145 in her checking account and facing the prospect of mortgaging family farms that have been in our family since the 1860's.

Needless to say my sister and I will be busy the next few days trying to get her life back in order which will not be a fun process.

Disagreeing with you an other issues would not influence my thoughts on this. I would gladly stand with you to fight these leeches on the elderly.

IMHO Leeches that prey upon the elderly do not deserve to be breathing our oxygen.
For me they rate right down there with the murderers, rapists, child molesters, corrupt politicians and others in high level positions of responsibility and trust that prey upon the innocent.

I will be sending you good thoughts and hope thing will work out as good as possible.
And for the rest of us out here, do we check on our elderly enough? Asking financial questions is sometimes considered rude or improper. Sometimes it is a none of your nosy business thing, but I guess we should ask.

As a whole, it is disgraceful how well we treat or criminals as opposed to how poorly we treat our elderly. (Sorry, do not mean to get off track. Just makes me mad!)

You have my sympathies. My parents were scammed when in their early 80s but luckily we found out and were able to stop it before the scum got everything. The scammer got away. Got a phone call last month from the sheriff looking for any info on the scammer. He had done it again.
My dad was a very savvy businessman in his younger days, but too trusting in his old age. I plan to have legal papers drawn up that will put any assets I may have at age 75 into a trust managed by my much-younger sister and my stepson and let them look after my finances.

My Mom had several friends that were scammed and was so afraid that she might fall for something that she turned all her finances over to my brother that lived closest. He checked with the rest of us to be sure it was okay with us. It worked for our family, but we all get along well and no one is selfish.

I hope you can protect your Mom and maybe get something back. Mom used her credit cards for everything, had my brother keep her check book so if they called in a weak moment she couldn't break down. She got a call in the middle of the night one time by a scammer. They wanted her to post bail to get my DD out of jail. She called me early in the morning to make sure DD was okay, but didn't send money. Several neighbors did for their GD. So many take so much medication that they are fuzzy in the middle of the night and scammers prey on that.

There are a lot of "little scams" that rob the elderly too. Sweepstakes, "first 50" offers, especially nostalgic printed offers for Bibles, etc, and the shopping networks. They fleece the elderly and the "slow" too. They sell their names too. Magazine agencies and the "free issue" rope the elderly too. Some of these scams come in impressive envelopes that have an eagle looking bird on them. People think its a government thing and it scares the heck out of them. If they are getting magazines set them up either as a "gift" from a family member and ask that the name be blocked. That way the family member will get the renewal notices and Grandma won't get a lot of junk mail.

I worked in subscription fufillment for 15 years, I remember a man calling, his mother had about twenty years of a gymnast magazine coming. He said, "Heck, she can't even walk!"
